Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano and Girl Scouts of the USA CEO Kathy Cloninger today unveiled a Girl Scout preparedness patch—designed to engage Girl Scouts and their families in personal preparedness for all emergencies—and announced a new affiliation between DHS Citizen Corps and the Girl Scouts to advance community preparedness nationwide.
“This new preparedness patch will increase citizen preparedness and enhance our country’s readiness for disasters,” said Secretary Napolitano. “As a former Girl Scout, I know the ‘Be Prepared’ motto well—and I look forward to working with the Girl Scouts to spread the preparedness message to all of our nation’s citizens.”
“Girl Scouts are thrilled to be partnering with the Department of Homeland Security … Citizen Corps is a terrific program—one that provides an opportunity for our girls to lead the way in ensuring that their families and their communities are prepared for emergencies.”
The preparedness patch program, developed by the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides critical emergency preparedness information and activities for all levels of Girl Scouts.
In addition to collaborating on the new patch, Secretary Napolitano and Ms. Cloninger also signed an agreement formalizing an affiliation between Citizen Corps and the Girl Scouts that creates a partnership to motivate young women to become community leaders in emergency management and response fields and raises public awareness about personal preparedness, training and community service opportunities.
The announcements took place at Scotchtown Hills Elementary School in Laurel, Md., where Secretary Napolitano participated in President Obama’s My Education, My Future initiative by visiting students and listening to the President’s remarks encouraging them to work hard, set educational goals and take responsibility for their learning.
The announcements are part of September’s National Preparedness Month, during which Secretary Napolitano is encouraging citizens around the country to focus on becoming better prepared for and more resilient in the face of emergencies of all kinds.
DHS Citizen Corps, part of FEMA’s Community Preparedness Division, is a community-based initiative to bring government and community leaders together to involve citizens and organizations in all-hazards emergency preparedness, planning, mitigation, response and recovery.
The Girl Scouts of the USA, chartered by Congress in 1950, is a worldwide organization dedicated solely to girls to build character and skills for success in the real world in an accepting and nurturing environment.

As someone who had relatives in Germany & Slovakia during The War, I find this post (and all others like it) to be highly offensive.
The people who are trying to draw comparisons between what happened in Hitler’s Germany and what our President is doing right now should be ashamed of themselves.
If anything, the sweeping ideology, sneering, hateful commentary and complete disregard for factual information that is being embraced by the ‘far right’ is more in tune to the German historic period following WWI.
I am a conservative, and I find this to be highly unacceptable and not the least bit representative of my political views. I think it is disturbing that the Republican party isn’t working to distance itself from this type of rhetoric.

If we don’t at least consider this a possibility, we will, as did the Italians and Germans, wake up to find ourselves in a place we never planned on being.

As far as having the relatives, perhaps you should visit with them and learn their views of what is happening here. My relatives who survived Eastern Europe under Stalin are very alarmed by current events.

This is truly crazy. I have two children and here are some of things I’ve taught them:
If there is a broken limb laying across a sidewalk, move it so people can walk through.
If you happen across a motorist in need, stop and offer your assistance.
If the storm drain at the end of the street is clogged, clear it so the neighborhood doesn’t flood.
And if you see a suspicious activity underway, including possible terrorism, call the police.
All of those things are “my children being used by the state,” because if they don’t take action, some government employee will have to. And I don’t really mind if they end up interacting with someone from the government in the process. and you think this is the first step toward allowing a “tyrant” taking control?
In case you didn’t notice, Obama was elected by a solid majority of the public. His economic policies have been too aggressive and warrant concern and opposition from principled conservatives. But on issues related to personal liberties he has been completely benign, much more so than his predecessor who actually was wiretapping, setting up secret prisons, etc.
The paranoia exhibited by posts like this, as well as the hysteria over Obama’s speech to schoolchildren, are a discredit to the conservative movement. Get a grip!
And BTW, when your post concerns the Girl Scouts and has a picture of Hitler Youth along with their paean to the Fuhrer, then yes, you are comparing the Girl Scouts to Hitler Youth.

It is disgusting isn’t it? My mother spent 4 years in a camp (she lived in Bratislava), and my father had to flee in the middle of the night from Piscek with his family… What VV does is try to create equivalency with his made up pain to the actual pain our families had to go through – which diminishes the actual terrors of the Holocaust and the Soviet occupation of our homelands.

Slovika is my mother’s homeland. As for undocumented workers, they are family friends not relatives. I don’t suppose you celebrate birthdays with those folks from over the border. We do.
