Gabrielle Giffords in a Bunker

Hat tip to my good friends at Gila Courier for finding this recent editorial in the Green Valley News.

The good news is that the General Election got a whole lot easier for the Republican nominee with editorials like this in retirement communities like Green Valley.

The whole editorial is full of great money quotes so I’ll reprint it here:

Giffords hiding from GV, Sahuarita
Published: Tuesday, August 11, 2009 3:10 PM MDT

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has seen what has happened to her House and Senate colleagues over the past week at healthcare town hall meetings across the country and she’s hunkering down.

Some would say she’s hiding.

Giffords cancelled public appearances Thursday at American Legion Post #66 in Sahuarita and at Pima Community College, and announced that she has combined and moved them to a heavily secured Air Force base.

Probably because it’s trickier for protesters to get past soldiers with guns.

Giffords’ communications director insists that combining the appearances – during which she’ll talk about the new GI Bill – was necessary because of growing interest that required a bigger venue.

Baloney. (And that’s putting it kindly.)
This same staff member said Giffords had no public healthcare forums planned despite questions and confusion among constituents that is growing by the hour. Then he said Giffords couldn’t possibly schedule a healthcare town hall now because it takes a lot of time to line up a venue and the staff to make it happen.

That’s an odd statement given that they secured the auditorium at Davis-Monthan AFB virtually on a moment’s notice.

To be sure, Giffords hasn’t escaped without bruises in all of this. She was met with shouts in Douglas a week ago during a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a grocery store, and protesters have targeted her in Sierra Vista and Tucson in the past week.

What do they want? Answers.

Her official response: “Southern Arizonans want a civil discussion on reforming our health insurance system, and we must call for an immediate end to the manipulation and misleading statements by outside special interest groups. We deserve a full and honest debate on this critical issue.”

We sure do, so let’s start talking.

I’m guessing just about any school in Congressional District 8 (or any of several rec centers in Green Valley) would be eager to host a town hall meeting on short notice. (And, I should add, if a member of Congress has trouble booking a hall in the face of the most high-profile matter in the country, we’re all in trouble.)

But the fact is Giffords doesn’t want to talk to you right now. Maybe next month when things blow over.

It’s understandable, of course. How much real work can get done amid angry shouts and sign-waving – she said just that a week ago in Sierra Vista. But Giffords needs to remember that anger stems from frustration, and frustration manifests itself in what should be interpreted as nothing less than a demand for answers.

So here’s or proposal: Come to Green Valley. We’ll book the venue and promise the exchange will be civil and informative. The local radio station, KGVY, has even offered to stream it live from another location if that makes Giffords more comfortable.

But come. And help us all make sense of this.

Maricopa County experiences dramatic decrease in crime and illegal immigration

“The Maricopa Model” Shows Tough Policies Work
More Prison, Fewer Illegals, Less Crime

County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today that despite a rising population and other factors that generally drive up the crime rate, Maricopa County has experienced a dramatic decrease in both crime and illegal immigration. These clear trends are occurring county-wide, and reveal the impact of both effective collaboration among law enforcement agencies and tough and visionary prosecution policies in the County Attorney’s Office.

The crime rate per 100,000 people in Maricopa County decreased 8% from 2007 to 2008 and 18% from 2004 to 2008. During this same period, the violent crime rate in Maricopa County dropped 8% and the property crime rate fell 21%. This decline occurred even though the county’s population actually grew by just under 11 percent during the same period.
Between 2004 and 2008 the crime rate fell by:

32.6% in Gilbert

25.6% in Mesa

25.3% in Tempe

20.1% in Chandler

18.0% in Scottsdale

15.7% in Phoenix

15.2% in Peoria

06.3% in Glendale

This dramatic success story runs contrary to conventional wisdom among criminologists. Thomas attributed these trends to three major factors. First, police agencies are using current technology and tactics to effectively address specific crime problems in their areas. There has also been enhanced coordination with the County Attorney’s Office. One example is the identity theft protocol signed by Valley police agencies in 2005, an agreement to investigate identity theft cases that Thomas’s office brokered.

Second, because of tougher policies in the County Attorney’s Office, prosecutors are sending significantly more serious and repeat felons to prison. From 2004 to 2008, the number of criminals in Maricopa County sent to the Department of Corrections increased 29.3%.

Third, the joint crackdowns on illegal immigration with the Sheriff’s Office have led to an unprecedented collapse in the illegal immigration population. The Center for Immigration Studies recently released a report showing that since 2007, Arizona has seen a 30% drop in its illegal immigrant population. This finding is consistent with substantial anecdotal evidence of declining illegal-immigrant populations during that same time, many of which were reported by the local media (such as declining school enrollment numbers, the shuttering of businesses that largely catered to illegal immigrants, etc.). Nationally the amount of decrease in the illegal-immigrant population was 14% according to the CIS report.

County Attorney Andrew Thomas says the numbers speak for themselves: “Tough policies against crime and illegal immigration do work. The lesson is obvious: more time, less crime.”

Graph: More Time, Less Crime: Valley Crime Rates Decline as More Criminals Are Sent to Prison
The Phoenix Business Journal analyzed recent data on illegal immigration in the Valley and, on July 30, reported: “A marked drop in Phoenix-area crime coincides with the recession and a drop in the number of illegal immigrants in Arizona.”

On April 13, 2009, The Wall Street Journal reported that illegal immigration and Mexican drug cartels are a driving force behind auto theft nationally, and that border cities are the hardest hit. Yet the auto-theft rate in the Valley fell by 38% between 2006 and 2008, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Since taking office, Thomas has implemented a series of policies to make certain that dangerous offenders serve serious prison time. These include:

Plead to the Lead – Implemented in 2005, this policy requires that adults charged with serious violent offenses such as first-degree murder, drive-by shooting, or sexual assault plead to the most serious crime they are charged with as part of any plea agreement or go to trial.

Dangerous Crimes Against Children Policy – Implemented in 2006, this policy requires adults who commit certain crimes against children receive substantial prison time. For cases in which the defendant faces the mandatory minimum sentence of 35 years, the plea offer must require at least 35 years in prison.

Repetitive and R.O.P. Offenders – This policy was intensified in 2007 to ensure that offenders with even one previous felony conviction go to prison, rather than receiving probation.
Gang Offenders – Plea agreements concerning gang crimes were toughened in 2008. For example, if a defendant is a documented gang member possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime as part of his participation in a criminal syndicate, prison time must be part of the plea agreement.

Illegal Immigration Crackdowns – Thomas and Sheriff Joe Arpaio have led the nation’s toughest crackdowns on illegal immigration. These have included enforcement of the state human-smuggling law against both smugglers and illegal immigrants and workplace raids and prosecutions related to the Legal Arizona Workers Act.

These policies have had a direct impact on the number of criminals Maricopa County has sent to the state prison system. In 2005, that figure was 10,733. The next year it climbed to 12,363. In 2008, that number rose further to 13, 386.

Local Democrats Take Nationalized Health Care Show to Marana

Local Democrats have decided to try a new tactic to sell the federal healthcare takeover to citizens in Arizona. The national party has enrolled the help of THE most liberal state legislator in Arizona to lead the charge, Kyrsten Sinema.

Next Thursday, Krysten Sinema (D-15) along with Nancy Young Wright (D-26) and Pat Fleming (D-25) will appear at a special town hall forum in Marana. The event will be held at the Heritage Highland’s Clubhouse in the Dove Mountain Ballroom in Marana from 10 AM to noon.

If this sounds familiar, it is. It certainly is to me and that’s because I have been organizing town hall forums across the state on behalf of Americans for Prosperity since April. Apparently, the Democrats figured out that our model of town hall’ing is popular and working with Arizonans. However, I do think they’re going to be in for a shock when the discover that they may not attract a friendly crowd – that is, unless they bus “their” people in and utilize local media to stage the event. Something tells me it may not go exactly as they plan.

A little more background information on who’s participating. Kyrsten Sinema was selected by the Obama Administration to serve on the White House Health Reform Task Force. She was the only legislator from Arizona to be chosen and that’s because the Obama Administration wanted the most “progressive” lawmaker from the State of Arizona. Kyrsten is their gal.

In the press release issued by House Democrats, Young Wright is quoted:

I know the retirees and seniors I represent struggle with the rising costs of health care every day. I want to make sure I hear their ideas about options for the best quality and affordable health care, especially in tough economic times like these.

This is your opportunity to let Representatives Sinema, Young Wright and Fleming know how you feel.

One final note that definitely irritates me. As I have put the Americans for Prosperity town halls together, I have invited BOTH Republicans AND Democrats to participate. I doubt that Representatives Vic Williams David Stevens or Senator Al Melvin were invited to these events.

Here is a link to the map of the event if you care to attend.

Ed Pastor – Totally Out of Touch

At least that’s the impression one gets when they visit his official congressional website. According to the “Newsroom” section of his website, Congressman Ed Pastor has not issued a press release since May 15th. That’s 89 Days!

Am I missing something or is Ed Pastor missing in action? He hasn’t scheduled any town hall meetings which is remarkable because he lives in a so-called ”safe” Democratic district and should not have anything to worry about from the “angry mobsters.”

If the national trend of voter anger continues, Republicans are going to kick themself for not challenging Mr. Pastor in 2010.

Pima Community College Pulls Cord on Health Care Event

This just in from the Jesse Kelly campaign:

Dear Patriots,

On Tuesday, Pima Community College decided to withdraw the use of their facility for our Health Care Debate for what they cited as concerns over “possible violence”.

In order to ensure that the people are heard on this important issue, our campaign was able to secure a new location a few hours later.

The new location for the scheduled debate challenge is the Inn Suites Hotel at 475 N. Granada Ave. in Tucson, AZ on Tuesday, August 18th from 7:00pm till 9:00pm. The date and times of the event remain the same, only the location has been changed. This event will remain free and open to the public. No RSVP is required.

We look forward to seeing you all there for a transparent, open, and respectful debate on the future of health care reform in America.

Thank you for your continued trust and support.

Sincerely,

A Guardian Angel’s View of the Budget Crisis

Here is a pretty interesting take on the horrendous process taking place at the Arizona Legislature. Again, the irony in all this is that the ascent of a Republican Governor was supposed to make the entire process quick and harmonious but as you can see from the veterans like Barry Aarons and Howie Fischer, it has been anything but that.

Dean Martin Considering Run for Governor

While I’m on the topic of gubernatorial candidates, State Treasurer Dean Martin has indicated that he is considering a run for Governor. If this doesn’t indicate an incumbent governor in trouble, I don’t know what does.

I’m not surprised.

Because Dean Martin has had his finger on the pulse of the State’s financial health for several years, he should know something about what he’s considering. Let’s not forget that Dean Martin stood up against Governor Janet Napolitano in a very public way and warned Arizonans that the Napolitano was taking the state dangerously close to the edge of an economic precipice.

Now that we’ve fallen off the cliff into economic and political unrest, Dean has the political gravitas to say, “I warned you this day would come.”

That day has come and instead of pulling the rip cord in cooperation with the conservative Republican dominated legislature, the current governor is concerned about buying a new parachute.

I’ve know Dean Martin ever since he made his first bid for the State Senate against incumbent, Tom Horne. The campaign slogan back then was “when pigs fly.”

Maybe Dean’s words were prophetic because the current state budget is one big pig and let’s just say right now, it ain’t flying.

I don’t know if Dean Martin will announce for Governor. I haven’t spoken with him recently. But I do have tremendous respect, admiration and sympathy for him. But if he does decide to run, he will be an extremely formidible Republican candidate.

Obama’s Health Care – Beyond the Pale

Here what the Acorn Organizer-in-Chief has to say on the topic,

“You can’t fix the economy, without fixing health care.”

An issue affecting less than 59 million Americans (out of a population of about 330 million).  Of course, if there were less people there’d be less pollution, more for everyone else, and fixing the economy would be much easier (especially if they don’t have to pay out Social Security to the Baby Boom generation now coming into the system.  But how to do that?

And here’s the special interests, the big drug companies who stand to recover their paltry $150 million to change your entire future…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s drugmakers stand ready to spend $150 million to help President Barack Obama overhaul health care this fall, according to numerous officials, a staggering sum that could dwarf attempts to derail Obama’s top domestic priority.  [a special interest of Biblical proportions]http://www.foxnews.com/politics/elections/2009/08/08/drug-industry-helping-obama-overhaul-health-care/

But who wrote those thousands of pages of health care legislation?  Your elected officials or their staff?  Who’s Orwellian vision is this [e-u-g-e-n-i-c-s] program?  Have you ever heard of Jacob Hacker or Tides Momentum?  How about Senator John Kerry?  Yes?  you recognize that name … well remember his ‘french’ wife, Theressa?

The Tides Foundation is her ‘progressive’ organization and a part of the

Open Society foundation network (George Sorros) and the Tides Foundation (Theressa Kerry):

This quote is taken from Tides Momentum 2008 Plenary Session, the guy quoted is the guy who designed those thousands of pages of “health care reform” now sitting before the U.S. Congress.  Remember his name, Jacob Hacker.

For the first time since 1992, we can more than just hope that the U.S. healthcare crisis will somehow be solved—we can see real possibilities emerging. Already on the ground and in the trenches in the U.S. and abroad, Momentums Health plenary speakers are laying the foundation for system-wide changes

Since 1992?  A crisis? Have you listened to these guys?

Well, it seems very few folks are even aware they exist.  Yet BigDrug Inc is willing to invest $150,000,000 to ram this health care nightmare through Congress this Fall whether or not you like it.

The last video for you to digest is complete disinformation about the disinformation from the White House Office of Disinformation … note the old video footage.  Oh, and that guy Jacob Hacker?  Watch

As for ACORN?  Just the “community thugs” to enforce CHANGE (whether or not you want it) … and if you’re over 55?  the ‘community counselor will be by to dialog with you about hospice’ (monthly until you die).  And don’t worry about the health care costs of the mentally or physically challenged in the years to come, DNA screening and abortion will be provided to those found in need – no one will be left out.

Are you ready for Eugenics in the Progressive Era?

Robert Graham Announces for Governor

I’ll admit, I didn’t see this announcement coming but Phoenix Business Journal has the story.

As someone who has been involved in Republican Party politics for twenty years, I’ve never heard of him nor seen him at any party meetings. I’m going to throw this one open to whoever wants to comment on Mr. Graham.

We should expect more of these announcements as Governor Brewer continues for a sales tax hike in a struggling economy. But as I speculated earlier, I don’t believe Governor Brewer will officially run for Governor in 2010.

Robert Graham’s website is GrahamforGovernor.com.

(And does this guy look like Sean Astin or what?)

Jeff Flake Holds Town Hall Tonight!

Congressman Jeff Flake from the 6th Congressional District will be conducting a town hall in Chandler this evening. Bring your video cameras and we’ll see you there!

Shadegg’s Town Hall – Civilized Participation

In all the excitement of this last weekend, I almost forgot to post video footage of Congressman John Shadegg’s meeting. What was remarkable is that many of the same people who were at the protest at Harry Mitchell were in attendance at John Shadegg’s town hall and they were very civilized – no angry mob with pitchforks and torches. Yes, there was one citizen who advocated for a single-payer system but he was treated with respect and not beaten up.
