Another unfortunate thing about not passing the Sanctuary City bill is it would have ensured that Sheriff Arpaio’s illegal immigration enforcement funding cannot be taken away, as Napolitano has done to him. The Sanctuary Six Republicans who refused to vote on HB2280 really hurt our state when it comes to illegal immigration enforcement. Sonoran News has an article discussing Rep. Barto’s failure to appear for a vote on the bill. They discovered that this is not the first time Barto has avoided voting on an illegal immigration bill – which has the same effect as a no vote. Here is what they found -
During the 2006 legislative session, Barto voted “present” on House Bill 2577 (illegal aliens; employment; verification) and failed to vote during the third reading.
Barto refused to vote on HB2580 (illegal aliens; serious felonies; bail).
Barto voted “present” on Feb. 6 on HB 2582 but then refused to vote on March 9, while finally voting “yea” a few days later.
She voted “present” on HB 2837, an anti-sanctuary bill, later voting against it.
Initially Barto voted “present” on another bill, dealing with illegal aliens and trespassing, but later voted against it.

Shane, seriously can you get control of your blog? This is the third almost identical post by Chewie spewing the same blatant misinformation. Barto’s explanation has already been posted on this very site and yet Chewie and her boss have a vendetta to carry out so they’re just going to continue to beat a dead horse.
Chuck Coughlin (“Roger”),
As you can see in the comments after these posts, this is a very interesting political issue, and people on all sides want to comment on it. Just because Chuck Coughlin don’t agree with a lot of the posts that go up under “Chewie” doesn’t mean that they should be censored. I wrote this post and I work in real estate – for myself, I don’t have a boss and I am not beholden to anyone. You should refrain from trying to blame others for this information, because Arizonans want to know what’s going on at the legislature, even though you’d rather hide that information and protect your clients.
Chewie
I find it telling that Chuck Coughlin never comes on this blog and denies that Roger is him.
Chuck Coughlin is also behind the deceptive anonymous blog Fix Arizona. It pretends to care about Arizona but it’s a sham to promote tax increases and spending to benefit his clients. Chuck – give it up, you’ve been exposed everywhere trying to get your sales tax increase for your construction clients.
I think it’s ironic that you are speaking about someone who I have no association with all while doing so behind a lame alias. At least I’m up front with my name. An associate informed me that Coughlin ran Pearce’s re-elect last year. I think we all know where my opinion lies with him.
My issue with you isn’t that you post. You’ll notice I don’t comment on every one of your posts, just the ones that leave out facts you have been shown are blatantly inaccurate.
George, after Chewie started his obsession with Coughlin, he wrote a letter correcting where Chewie was wrong or had outright lied.
Annie, add yourself to the list of people who claim this tax somehow is going to fund new infrastructure projects. You have an open invitation to explain yourself but I’m sure just like everyone else, you’ll conveniently not have any response.
Wow…what a great post. I really think you should run candidates against these so called six.
Well now…I’d recommend calling Rep. Barto’s office if you were concerned about this story, but I doubt she’s in today. She has reportedly joined 15 other Arizona Legislators for a primo special interest junket to Atlanta, GA this week. During the “biggest budget challenge in the history of Arizona” (Huppenthal – Monday this week http://www.arizonaeducationnetwork.com/2009/07/where-is-sen-pres-bob-burns-your-questions-answered-71409/), I might add.
Sensitive tax payer that I am, I’m a little confused why our elected ‘leadership’ is hanging out at the Hyatt while Arizona’s schools, social services, prison guards, etc. are all left in limbo. And don’t even get me started on about the cost of that trip…or who must have paid for it!
Where was all this rancor when “independent” John Shadegg called border security conscious Republicans a bunch of intolerant xenophobes?
To Parent X:
Apparently you ARE confused. No one has been left in limbo, certainly not the schools. Despite the whining from the AEA and the Dems that our schools were being “decimated,” (despite an only 2.2% cut), K12 education has been fully funded to the tune of $100 Million more than last year.
The truth about trips such as this “junket”: typically they are funded by the private sector in the form of scholarships to elected officials and staff for education.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to debate issues in Sonoran Alliance and other blogs. It would be nice to use facts instead of useless rhetoric that provides only heat and no light.
Is that 2.2% of state funds or is that to the entire budget?
As for the junkets…if paid for by the private sector, then that is even more troubling. It is like a gift, promotes graft, and access to legislators that no one else gets. Wouldn’t you be angry if it was the AEA or a union sponsoring it? I would be angry too..if it were Goldwater or the Center for Arizona Policy, or developers, etc.
Here is La Raza’s list of favorite Arizona Republicans: Nancy Barto LD7, Rich Crandall LD19, Adam Driggs LD11, Doug Quelland (gone anyway), Lucy Mason LD1, Bill Konopnicki LD5, Andrew Tobin LD1, Russ Jones LD24, John McComish LD20, Carolyn Allen LD8 and John Nelson LD12.
Roger, You neglected to list John Shadegg CD-3, Flake CD-6, McAmnesty and “5 Sheriffs Kyl” in your list of La Raza’s favorite Arizona Republicans. I hear the the Brown Berets are real partial to the “dishonorable fifteen” as well. AZTLAN now!
Roger Coughlin’s bad advice is ruining Arizona and will make people vote for another democrat like Jan Napolitano. He will make money either way and that is all he cares about. These republican he defends are bad for us. My husband works very hard to pay the bills. I don’t know if we can stay in our house much longer if our tax goes up. There is very little money left at the end of the month now. If you make a lot of money the tax isn’t a big problem. We don’t! The illegals are taking a lot of the money that could go to something else so we don’t have a tax increase. These bad republicans need to understand the voting is important. I am sorry if it is not convenient for you but we need help1
Congrats on bringing illegals into the mix. And people wonder why our Party has been neutered.
Alicia and Roger Ginge,
The other Roger is right. This is going to kill your party. He may not want me to say this, but I think you should really target all on your list Roger Ginge. Get challengers for them..good conservative ones. Knock them out like you did Hershberger, Hellon…and ultimately and in a different way…Bee and Huffman.
See, Roger..not Roger Ginge…knows that this brand of populist conservatism is going to make your party unelectable.
Roger, it took me a long time to move from blindly conservative, to libertarian, to independent, to finally a democrat. Wont you join us?
Sadly Kral you’re not alone in the slippery slope. The I’s are gaining massive numbers in registration and it’s all coming from R’s. While most of the D’s are first time registrars, they also lay claim to a lot of I’s switching also.
Republican with extremely flexible values is what is killing the Republican Party. Not people willing to stand firm on the platform. The Party for lower taxes and limited government is not living up to the promises made to we the people. Brewer will die by Roger’s tax increase and Roger will smile all the way to the bank. Property tax will go up and people like Alicia will lose their homes. Only a fool or someone standing to gain personally pushes for a tax increase in a recession.
Since the post was on the Sanctuary bill and Barto’s vote, I don’t know why Mr. Coughlin is confused by the talk on illegals. I’m more interested to know why he wants to squelch the debate. Must fit his personal agenda.
You are right on both fronts Roger. And I give you great props and courage for being willing to stand up as a moderate while your party is changing so rapidly in the wrong direction.
BUT, at some point you have to think this. Which party am I more likely to have an impact one and which one thinks most like me?
I can’t imagine that THIS GOP thinks like you and I doubt that you will have any hope in the coming years to pull them back.
They are cutting out folks like Hershberger and Hellon with glee, going after these folks, and ultimately there will be a lot of them in power, very little hope of overcoming it, and it will be a minority party.
Mole…I think you will see that you are wrong. No one wants higher taxes but ours are already quite low. Remember to that it is a proposal for an election for a tax increase. What are your worried that people are stupid or something and might vote for it? Or are you worried that there are too few people that think like you do?
Last, think of this. Most people see their teachers being laid off, massive deficits, and they see already poor and underfunded state services being cut more. At some point, you cut govt back so far that people start to see that it doesn’t work and that the things they rely on…fireman, police, teachers, social workers, road builders, and parks, start to suffer.
They won’t let that happen for people to continue to pay little to nothing and sacrifice these benefits.
Since Roger mentioned it, here are the latest voter registration totals as of April 2009.
The gap between Republicans and Democrats is narrowing and narrowing…and voter growth by the two parties is growing ever more Democrat.
Republicans continue to dominate the voter rolls, with 1,137,262 voters, but the party posted the smallest percentage gain, up 1.7 percent.
Democratswere next, with 1,046,140 voters, up 2.3 percent.
Independents make up over 800,000 now and are growing even faster. Most studies nationally find that Independent are more and more leaning Democrat and not Republican.
So I think you are seeing shifts from Republican to Independent…and higher increases in Dems.
Last, the demographics should freak you out the most. The GOP is becoming and older and older party…and are losing voters yearly to unfortunately…death. Dems are younger and younger.
I have no problem letting the people decide if they want to give the government more money. We all know how frugal government is with our money. Just look at the $700,000 social security just spent on their party to improve workers moral. Or the County’s Taj Mahal for $350 million before cost overruns. It is unlikely a tax increase will pass and if it does, I’ll just put off large purchases, like a new car, until (if) it goes away. Many will do the same. Is that good for the economy? I mean other than Coughlin’s profits from the advertizing campaign.
This is about republicans that did not live up to promises made “to we the people.” The republican brand name is obviously tainted. Is it because republican did not live up to their promises to the voters? Or is the platform fundamentally flawed? The easy way to find out is to live up to the promises made and let voters decide. Barto didn’t do that, at least this time. Sanctuary policies endanger police, kill legal citizens and cost money. Americans must come first! Sanctuary policies must end!
“Sanctuary policies endanger police, kill legal citizens and cost money.”
This is incredible.
Mole, again you are assuming I am Coughlin which I clearly am not. You also are misquoting the Republican Platform. I suggest you look it up before piping off.
I did not quote it, but here is the link. http://www.gop.com/2008Platform/ Read it yourself chuck.
Roger,
Teachers are NOT laid off simply because they have not been given a guaranteed contract prior to April 15 for next year. Other than the socialist district school monopoly, NO state funded employee is given a guaranteed contract prior to April 15 for the next fiscal year. Have ALL state employees therefore been laid off? What an intentionally misleading statement.
As to the Republican Party Platform, I have read it and I understand it. This will be unusually long, but your comments make it necessary to paste the actual language from the platform in the area of illegal immigration.
“Our determination to uphold the rule of law begins with more effective enforcement, giving our agents the tools and resources they need to protect our sovereignty, completing the border fence quickly and securing the borders, and employing complementary strategies to secure our ports of entry. Experience shows that
enforcement of existing laws is effective in reducing and reversing illegal immigration.
Our commitment to the rule of law means smarter enforcement at the workplace, against illegal workers and lawbreaking employers alike, along with those who practice identity theft and traffic in fraudulent documents. As long as jobs are available in the United States, economic incentives to enter illegally will persist.
A phased in requirement that employers use the E-Verify system must be enacted.
The rule of law means guaranteeing to law enforcement the tools and coordination to deport criminal aliens without delay and correcting court decisions that have made deportation so difficult. It means enforcing the law against those who overstay their visas. It means imposing maximum penalties on those who smuggle illegal aliens into the U.S., both for their
lawbreaking and for their cruel exploitation. It means requiring cooperation among federal, state and local law enforcement and real consequences, including the denial of federal funds, for self described sanctuary cities,
which stand in open defiance of the federal and state statutes that expressly prohibit such sanctuary policies, and which endanger the lives of U.S. citizens.”
That is the Republican Party Platform on the subject and the Wake Up Arizona Sanctuary Six acted in direct violation of these principles. It is time for them to realign themselves with the Republican Platform or follow the Reagan philosophy of “let them go their way.”
Oh here’s another problem that is causing real problems. Over $300 billion a year in federal taxes are lost due to fraud and underpayment. This means we all need to pay more for the companies and individuals who shirk their responsibilities. What is our local governments doing – nothing! Rather than look into fraud in federal tax payments they have created “sanctuary cities” all over the US in which perpetrators of tax fraud can live with no threat of local governments charging them with tax fraud. It is time for the state to step in and force all local governments to start investigating this serious crime.
Rep. Barto has sent out a lengthy, plausible-on-the-face-of-it explanation about why she failed to support a ban of sanctuary cities. According to her, she is a strong supporter of legal immigration, and against illegal immigration. Then why does her voting record show otherwise? How many times can somebody claim to be one thing while doing the other?
Rep Barto – I hope you are reading this. We the people have you in the spotlight. Your job now, is to find as many reasons to vote against the illegals in every way that you can, as you have found reasons till now, to avoid taking action. If you do not do that, please look for another job. We will help you do that.
Illegal Immigration and health care are heavily connected, believe it or not. Massive high taxes are imposed on the US taxpayer to pay for so called emergency hospital care for illegal immigrants and their families. Except foreign nation use the emergency room for their basic needs, such as the flue or a splinter in the finger. As always the taxpayer is the recipient? Health care revision can never happen while Taxpayer carry the heavy burden of paying for the millions of illegal workers and families, who have settled here. As an example 80 hospitals and clinics locked their doors for good in the Sanctuary State of California, because huge hordes of individuals came their for free health care. Why do you think California found themselves with a $24.5 billion budget deficit?
Those who want to just follow the same old road, can do so with the profit taking commercial insurance. Those who would be satisfied with a government run health care program, can now start demanding it from the lawmakers. Those who see a Universal health care system, similar to most developed countries in Europe, should start informing every Representative and Senate politician starting today. Rationing in places like England, was caused by the major impact of uncontrolled immigration. I see–THE RATS–are coming out of the woodwork, using propaganda and downright lies about government run medical care? The Special interest lobby, status quo have very wealthy fingers in the pie and do not want Health care for everybody? It’s a trillion dollar business like Cancer treatments.
The pharmaceutical companies, AMA and others have very much to lose? Even many corrupt politicians are stockholders in this behemoth money machine. Most American working class can do–without– high premiums, pre-existing condition clauses. deductibles, co-pays that is representative of the wealthy medical care insurers.
Unless our politicians commit themselves to a strong E-Verify, Police enforcement 287(g) and enforce all federal employees are vetted, so illegal immigrant workers can be rooted-out. The push for AMNESTY, will even draw another invasion in to our nation once the word goes out.
This free health care atrocity was placed on the unknowing American, years past and never been rescinded. This has favored the business community, because they pay–ABSOLUTELY NOTHING– to a maimed or sick illegal worker, because it’s passed on to the consumer. IF YOU DESIRE A NEW HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, WHERE YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR INSURER? WHETHER YOU WANT THE FOR PROFIT INSURANCE OR GOVERNMENT MEDICAL CARE SYSTEM? TODAY IS CRITICAL. SO CALL YOUR SENATOR OR CONGRESSMAN 202-224-312. Just like illegal immigration , we cannot afford anymore to subsidize the business that hire them or the millions of illegal families. GOOGLE–on the web to find the truth.
Such issues as immigration reform and health care should not be left to a thrall of politicians, who many do not have the public interest at the heart in these matters? Already we have seen this materialize with the original under-funding of our main enforcement–THE BORDER FENCE CONSTRUCTION and the weakening of the illegal worker identifier–E-VERIFY? As it always happens the status-quo have always have the monetary inroads in influencing our legislators, leaving the general population to be startled by a new law enacted, before they have a chance to respond. It really doesn’t matter who is the majority party, the American people remain alienated from secret wheeling and dealing. H.R. bills and amendments are passed in Washington chambers, but the real payout takes place behind closed doors.
This happened when Sen. Harry Reid, Speaker Pelosi used their power to under-fund E-Verify or even kill it? Then in California right now–the SANCTUARY STATE–E-Verify is under a great deal of pressure, not to implement it. Assembly member Paul Fong (Cupertino) would prohibit the state, local governments, and special districts in California from requiring an employer to use the federal “E-Verify” system, even when that employer is a contractor to the government. This is typical at state or federal level, no matter the monetary consequences to the US worker. California residents should immobilize this idiot, and threaten him losing when it’s time for re-election. SAY NO to AB 1288
Right now as I comment Homeland Security Janet Napolitano is looking for ways, to undermine the ICE raids and 287(g) the local police enforcement law as seen with Sheriff Joe Ariapo in Maricopa County, Arizona and in other states I thought the whole idea of Homeland Security, along with our politicians when they took the oath of allegiance, was to protect us all. It’s more like they are out to protect the interests of the US Chamber of Commerce, Council of Foreign Relations, ACLU and all the open border, special interest groups, including millions of jobs for illegal immigrants into our country. GOOGLE—about their—REAL—INTENTIONS?
They are already showing their true unpatriotic colors, by trying to force through another disastrous immigration reform law. They keep telling us that the 1986 Simpson/mazzoli bill is broken, yet it was never enforced by any president after Ronald Reagan signed it into law. Nor would good old Ted Kennedy sponsored it, if it didn’t ring true? It’s just another trick; to legalize “God Knows” how many illegal aliens will swarm the immigration agencies. How many their really are? Which is anybodies guess, will costs trillions of dollars to support these illiterate people in the majority of cases.
Not the pariah farmers or the businesses that do the hiring, but the taxpayer will have to foot the bill and the millions more who the lay siege to the border–once the word AMNESTY is heard. Now it’s up to the American people to demand–NO MORE AMNESTIES! GOOGLE–illegal immigration and financial costs, because the public is constantly fed propaganda from the Liberals. Call your state or federal representative today! 202-224-3121 in addition to sign the petition for California, to stop billions of welfare benefits, to the overrun State at TAXPAYER REVOLUTION. See the truth at NUMBERSUSA,
If you think that the proposed national health care plan will not include illegal aliens, you are very wrong. The people who are proposing this attack on the best health care system in the world also are the prime supporters of the illegals.
And who will be forced to pay the bill for these illegals, why the American citizens through the confiscation of their hard earned income. Go figure.
Brittanicus:
We have a paradox when it comes to health care!
A main reason why illegals pay nothing for health care lies in the fact that their employers pay them virtually nothing for wages and they mutually depend upon you and I as taxpayers to foot the bill.
And God forbid if any Sheriff or County Attorney or for that matter any public official should dare enforce or back up those enforcing the law.
What will the Chamber and Country Clubs say, since these institutions define “acceptable” political issues!
And at bottom Mrs. Barto, like all too many of her fellow GOPPERS, is a “Chambermaid”
Don’t hate on Roger Coughlin. They will get you.
