Driving Down Expectations

Elections have consequences and here’s one more consequence for those who voted for Barack Obama.

Meet your new government-issued automobile. Within the next decade, expect to have one of these beauties parked in your garage.

Don’t be fooled by the fancy glossy brochure though. These new Obamacars will come in two colors: grey and black.

Here’s what MyWay.com is reporting:

DETROIT (AP) – Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs. Carpenters will still haul materials around in pickup trucks, but they will cost more. Nearly everybody else will drive smaller cars, and more of them will run on electricity. The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama administration on Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet.

Of course, developing the technology will cost money – billions of dollars – and automakers will pass that on to their customers.

The Obama administration says the changes mean the average vehicle would cost about $1,300 more, although some private analysts say the increase will be much heftier.

Sheriff Arpaio says County Supervisors have a vendetta against him

Well whaddya know, another county elected official is calling the Board of Supervisors out for taking retaliatory actions against him. The County Supervisors have mismanaged money for years, spending irresponsible amounts of tax dollars on environmental programs like “Bring Back Blue” and “Running out of Air,” which didn’t work so they were dropped. They also hired a “diversity manager” who set up an entire diversity department which plastered the county with politically correct rainbow posters. Now they want other county agencies, including law enforcement agencies like the Sheriff’s Office and County Attorney’s Office, to cut 15% of their budgets. This is irresponsible. If there is one function of government that is more important than any other, it is public safety. Now we hear about inmates going on food strikes because they don’t like the bare bone meals they’re getting. The courts are getting backed up because the Sheriff doesn’t have enough officers any more to transport them to court every day. The Sheriff has been losing over 10 employees a month but has not been allowed to hire anyone to replace them. Meanwhile, the County Supervisors are telling him he can’t replace them, instead the County Supervisors insist on fully funding the $347 million court tower, and stealing $6 million from the County Attorney to set up their own competing legal department since they don’t like him! Well they don’t have that power, the people elected him, not the County Supervisors.

Thanks to one of our commenters yesterday who pointed out that this violates the law, by law the County Attorney is authorized to be the legal counsel for the county, not the Supervisors –

COUNTY ATTORNEY
A.R.S. 11-532. Powers and duties
A. The county attorney is the public prosecutor of the county and shall:
1. Attend the superior and other courts within the county and conduct, on behalf of the state, all prosecutions for public offenses.

3. When not engaged in criminal proceedings in the superior court, attend upon the magistrates in cases of arrest when required by them, and attend before and give advice to the grand jury.
4. Draw indictments and informations, defend actions brought against the county and prosecute actions to recover recognizances forfeited in courts of record and actions for recovery of debts, fines, penalties and forfeitures accruing to the state or county.
5. Deliver receipts for monies or property received in the county attorney’s official capacity and file duplicate receipts with the clerk of the board.
6. On the first Monday of January, April, July and October in each year, file with the board of supervisors an account, verified by oath, of all monies received in the county attorney’s official capacity during the preceding three months, and at the same time pay it to the county treasurer.
7. When required, give a written opinion to county officers on matters relating to the duties of their offices.
8. Keep a register of official business, and enter therein every action prosecuted, criminal or civil, and of the proceedings therein.
9. Act as the legal advisor to the board of supervisors, attend its meetings and oppose claims against the county which the county attorney deems unjust or illegal.
10. Act as attorney for school districts except as provided in section 15-343, or except in any lawsuits involving a conflict of interest with other county offices at which time the attorney general may represent the school district.
11. Act as attorney for the community college district except as provided in section 15-1448 or except in any lawsuits involving a conflict of interest with other county offices, at which time the attorney general may represent the community college district.
12. Defend all locally valued and assessed property tax appeals as provided in section 42-16208.
B. Upon receipt of an appellant’s brief in a criminal appeal, the county attorney shall furnish the attorney general with a true statement of the facts in the case, together with the available authorities and citations that are responsive to the assignments or specifications of error.
C. The county attorney may represent a school district governing board member against whom an action is brought in the board member’s individual capacity until such time as it is established as a matter of law that the alleged activity or events which form the basis of the complaint were not performed, or not directed to be performed, within the scope or course of the member’s duties.
D. Notwithstanding the provisions of article 12 of this chapter, in connection with the investigation or prosecution of any matter involving the death of a person, the county attorney may request that the medical examiner, for the county in which the prosecution will take place, conduct the medical examination.

Congratulations Jenn Daniels!

Over the course of the last five months I have had the privilege of helping out on the campaign of Jenn Daniels running for one of two council seats on the Gilbert Town Council. Well tonight all the hard work paid off with an astonishing upset victory in which Jenn placed 1st place not just by hundreds of votes but by over 1,180 votes to her nearest competitor! Let’s just say that we were all pleasantly surprised.

Unofficial Results:
Jenn Daniels: 8,139
John Sentz: 6,953
Joan Krueger: 6,782
Erin Scroggins: 6,675

Daniels, 30, a homemaker and mother of three children under 5, has waged an aggressive campaign in which she portrayed herself as someone who could better represent young families, a significant part of Gilbert’s overall population. ( Arizona Republic )

Political newcomer Jenn Daniels dominated the general election for two open seats on the Gilbert Town Council Tuesday night… ( East Valley Tribune )

John Lewis also officially captured the Gilbert Town Mayor’s seat with 12,487 votes. Congratulations to John’s campaign committee and Sean Noble for their efforts.

The Gilbert Town election is a good indicator that the people of Gilbert wanted new people on their council but they also wanted someone like themselves – someone to represent young conservative families. Jenn Daniels’ win captured that sentiment by leaps and bounds.

I expect Jenn to do great things on Gilbert’s council not just because she listens and communicates well but because she has a heart for the community and is dedicated to getting Gilbert through tough times.

Congratulations to Jenn and Eric and all her fine volunteers! Job well done!

I’d like to have your feedback on shutting off comments so feel free to let your voice be heard.

The Great Leap Forward

“Does the average citizen understand what this means? In from 10 to 20 years this country will be dependent entirely upon outside sources for a supply of liquid fuels … paying out vast sums yearly in order to obtain supplies of crude oil from Mexico, Russia, and Persia.”—Yale Professor Harold Hibbert, ethanol promoter, 1925

Not only is ethanol proving to be a dud as a fuel substitute but there is increasing evidence that it is destroying engines in large numbers.  According to this article in Business Week magazine, the bio-fuels craze may be imploding like the (banking, real estate, the auto industry, the credit industry).

No-Fly, No-Buy and Other 2nd Amendment items…

You know about the attempt to restore the failed “assault weapons ban” law, well here’s yet another attempt to encroach on your Second Amendment right… presenting H.R. 2401

On May 13, Democrat Rep. Carolyn McCarthy introduced The No Fly, No Buy Act (H.R. 2401), a bill that will merge the TSA’s no-fly list with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), a point-of-sale system for determining eligibility to purchase a firearm in the United States, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

Presently there are over 750,000 individuals on the No-Fly lists and it is reported that 20,000 are added weekly.  Homeland Security is in the process of transferring management of the list from the airlines to the federal government.   If you feel you’ve been put on the list wrongly, they have a form for you to fill out and, among the questions is: Why or how do you believe you came to be on this list?  Then again, the list is Top Secret so how would you know?

And in related Second Amendment insanity … the US Attorney General

…. said that new gun control laws are needed because in Mexico, a country with a history of corruption and disregard for individual rights, there’s a shooting war going on…”

Of course, what is usually ignored in this discussion is any mention that purchasing a firearm for a Mexican drug runner, and transferring a firearm to someone knowing it will be used to commit a violent or drug-trafficking crime, are currently federal felonies punishable by 10 years in prison.  That and the fact that only 17% of the firearms being used in Mexico today have US sources.

Oh, did we mention that Mexico has strict gun control laws?

If you want the facts on “assault weapons” here’s the link.

As a public service to our more moderate and beyond friends, we are posting this image for you to xerox and place in the windows of your home.  Proudly proclaim your tolerance of the criminals diversity today!

Free Expression for some but not for others?

The legislation, if passed, will label as terrorists those satellite providers that “knowingly and willingly contract with entities designated as specially designated global terrorists” under U.S. law. [full story here]

Someone who made a lot of sense once said,

If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all.

Where does this insanity end?  Once this is allowed to be applied to the satellite providers, how soon before it is extended to internet service providers and broadcast radio?  We may disagree with what they say, but when we allow government to silence them you know we’re next.

It may already be too late.

“I am a human being and human beings make mistakes,” Dratel said on behalf of Iqbal, who owned a small satellite television company, HDTV Ltd.

Dratel was recently sentenced to five years for marketing the Hezbollah television channel Al Manar to US cable TV customers.

I guess its ok since its speech we don’t like right?  Or, just like the terrorists in pink bandannas “bashing back” against a church, they’re just exercising their freedom of expression so its ok.  Those nasty church goers, they have it coming right?

whoops!  Am I bad… that’s China.  It could never happen here…

Napolitano seemed to overlook these domestic terrorists…

ADF files suit against radical group that invaded Mich. church
Group that openly advocates ‘riots,’ ‘crime,’ ‘insurrection’ targeted church for its views

Press Release
Wednesday, May 13, 2009, 11:10 AM (MST) |
ADF Media Relations | 480-444-0020

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Alliance Defense Fund attorneys filed suit in federal court Wednesday against a radical anarchist group that openly advocates the use of riots and crime to further its views in favor of homosexual behavior. ADF attorneys filed the suit on behalf of Delta Township’s Mount Hope Church against the group “Bash Back!,” which invaded the church’s building during a worship service on Nov. 9 of last year.

“The use of violent threats and criminal behavior to make a political point should never be acceptable in America,” said ADF Senior Counsel Gary McCaleb. “Bash Back! revealed how dangerous the homosexual agenda is to our First Liberty, religious freedom. ADF filed this suit to stop Bash Back! and other activist groups from invading churches, disrupting worship, silencing pastors, and terrifying adults and children who attend religious services.”

The Bash Back! Web site, which features a banner photo of members dressed in terrorist-like garb and wielding various objects as weapons, states on one page of the site that the group’s activities include “Riots, Sex Work, Crime, Insurrection, you know the fun stuff we do.” The Lansing chapter of the group targeted Mount Hope Church because of the church’s well-known Christian views on marriage and homosexual behavior. Through another page of its Web site, the group covertly recruited participants for its plans on Nov. 9, seeking some who would be willing to maintain “a more ‘militant’-looking presence out side [sic] of the building.”

“I can tell you that we are targeting a well-known anti-queer, anti-choice radical right wing establishment,” the page said. “However, we cant [sic] give you really any detailed information due to the cop who’s [sic] ridiculous job it is to do surveillance over this blog…. ‘ONLY ONE DIRECTION! TRANS AND QUEER INSURRECTION!’ – Bash Back! Lansing”

On Nov. 9, members of the group dressed in militant garb staged a protest outside the church during a worship service to distract security personnel, blocking access to the building and parking lot at various times. Other members of the group dressed in plain clothes then deceptively entered the building. At a coordinated time, they sprang up to disrupt the service, terrifying many attendees. The group shouted religious slurs, unfurled a sign, and threw fliers around the sanctuary while two women began kissing near the podium. The group pulled fire alarms as they ran out of the building. After the incident, the group bragged about its activities on its Web site and, on a separate page, explained its choice of Mount Hope: “This church is nothing short of a disease in the community, and in the minds of those who attend.”

Federal law imposes penalties upon anyone who “by force or threat of force or by physical obstruction, intentionally injures, intimidates or interferes with or attempts to injure, intimidate or interfere with any person lawfully exercising or seeking to exercise the First Amendment right of religious freedom at a place of religious worship.”

Diversity Lane visits Notre Dame

Imagine a world where your mother had been Pro-Choice.

Imagine a world where women simply wouldn’t consider destroying the life within them, even though it was perfectly legal to do so.

Imagine a world where the most innocent among us was the most precious and protected class of citizens.

Imagine a culture that celebrated life rather than artificial diversity.

Imagine a society in which children had both their father and their mother … AND their grandparents!

Imagine a society that wasn’t so totally wrapped in narcissism and self obsession with youth.

There’s a goal worthy of striving for, a time when abortions are legal and no woman would want one.

Shouldn’t this be what we’re working towards?

Isn’t this the world you would want for your children and your children’s children?

Shouldn’t this be our goal?

… Selah and Shalom.

You’re Going The Wrong Way!

There’s a great line in one of my favorite movies, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, when John Candy and Steve Martin are driving down a dark highway the wrong direction and another motorist is yelling and warning them they’re driving the wrong way.

Today, Glenn Beck, on his Fox program attempted to tell Californians the same thing. Here’s the clip from that presentation:

It is certainly times like these that give rise to individuals like Ronald Reagan who will go in and raze, overhaul and rebuild a state like California back to sanity.

God help us if the State of Arizona goes down the same road as California.

County Treasurer Hos Hoskins may sue Board of Supervisors over extravagant $347 million court tower

ABC-15 has another report on County Treasurer Hos Hoskins demanding accountability from the Board of Supervisors on their extravagant $347 million court tower. Hoskins held a press conference today expressing his outrage. Hoskins has had his share of run-ins with the County Supervisors, as have most of the other elected county officials. Most recently, he’s sparred with them over budget cuts – the Supervisors insisted that he cut 15% of his budget, but they refused to cut a cent from the court tower (obviously they’re in the tank to the construction companies that funded their reelections). Some excerpts from the article –

The project raises “grave concern for the financial well being and financial stability of Maricopa County,” according to County Treasurer Charles Hoskins.

“That report raised additional concerns about improper conduct by the Board of Supervisors, not the least of which is the refusal of the Board to provide public records to a major television network, effectively denying the public of the right to know how their tax dollars are spent,” the news release continued.

ABC-15 is asking readers to leave comments for the Board of Supervisors about the tower here.

We’re having a REALLY hard time figuring out how this pricey Taj Mahal court tower being paid for in cash (which includes penthouse quarters for the judges) can be justified as 45 employees from the Superior Court were just laid off.

Pima GOP Files Open Meeting Complaint Against Tucson City Council

For Immediate Release: May 18, 2009

PIMA GOP CHAIRMAN FILES FORMAL COMPLAINT TO INVESTIGATE OPEN MEETING VIOLATIONS BY CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS

Tucson, AZ – Bob Westerman, chairman of the Pima County Republican Party, today sent a letter to Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall to formally request an investigation of an obvious violation of the Arizona Open Meetings Law by members of the Tucson City Council.

“During a time when most elected officials are striving for transparency in government it is unfortunate that Councilwoman Trasoff has decided the people’s business can be conducted off-line” said Westerman. “Arizona law clearly states that public officials should refrain from any activities that may undermine confidence in the public decision making process including actions that may appear to remove discussions and decisions from public view”. The local press agrees. Last week the Tucson Citizen editorial stated “Council’s talks likely violated Arizona Open Meetings Law”.

We strongly encourage Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall to fully investigate this matter and take the appropriate action.

Franks to Pelosi: Apologize or Resign

Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) appeared on Fox New this morning to discuss the controversy over how much Speaker Pelosi knew about the CIA’s enhanced interrogation policies and when she knew it, and the significance about the Speaker of the US House potentially lying to the American people about a national security issue.

$347 million Taj Mahal new court tower includes marble, travertine, decorative porcelain tile, wood floors

Taj Mahal
The investigative reporters at Channel 15 have uncovered some of the extent of the luxury being paid for by taxpayers to build a new building for Maricopa County Superior Court. This blog and others have covered how not a cent is being cut from the pricetag, even though 45 employees were laid off from the courts a few weeks ago, and even though it had been brought up numerous times over the past year in meetings that due to the economy, the building could be scaled back or postponed. Unlike other projects, the tower is being paid for with cash, not bonding. We suspect there is an unethical relationship between the County Supervisors who refuse to cut any costs from the tower, and the construction and related companies who won the bids on the project – they probably contributed to the Supervisors’ reelection campaigns.our Taj Majal

Not all of the money is going to construction. In February 2007, 16 county officials traveled to New York and Philadelphia to tour the courts. The trip included sightseeing and expensive dinners along the way. Barbara Mundell, liberal presiding judge of the Superior Court (for all you commenters – she’s liberal even though she’s a registered Republican) led the trip.

Fortunately, the Sheriff’s Office is criminally investigating the court tower.

ABC 15 reports that the County is refusing to grant them access to thousands of pages of documents.
