How Bad Is It?

There has been quite a bit of discussion taking place amongst political insiders lately as Governor Brewer floats the idea of raising taxes. This is especially disheartening and disturbing to conservatives who have long trusted Governor Brewer to uphold her pledge not to raise taxes.

So many are asking what exactly is going on?

Is the economy REALLY that bad to warrant a temporary increase in taxes? Is there something Arizonans are not being told? Why did the Governor use the word “catastrophe” when discussing Arizona’s current economic status?

Many state legislators are standing firm against any form of a tax increase including calling a special election in which the voters would decide to self-tax.

Is Governor Brewer attempting to punt on the issue of raising taxes or is the State of Arizona really in desperate economic straits?

Many of us will be watching when the Governor addresses a joint session of the House and Senate this afternoon.

Mainstream Arizona still not following the law?

You may remember Mainstream Arizona. It was a left-wing independent expenditure committee run by Grant Woods, Bill Post, and other liberals that targeted conservative Republicans in 2004.

By any measure, Mainstream Arizona was a massive failure, as conservative Republicans romped in Arizona in the 2004 election. But Besides its futility, Mainstream Arizona drew attention because it used corporate contributions to try to influence elections, which is a criminal offense under Arizona law.

The Clean Elections Commission confirmed this when it found that Mainstream Arizona had indeed attempted to influence elections and awarded matching funds to those targeted by Mainstream Arizona. When a judge upheld the Commission’s ruling, Mainstream Arizona appeared as if it would be tagged with criminal campaign finance violations.

Enter Attorney General Terry Goddard and his then special counsel, Jessica Funkhouser. Goddard has a long history of proceeding with trumped up charges against Republicans, and Funkhouser has a long history of ineptly serving leftist/RINO politicians and organizations from Betsy Bayless to Terry Goddard to her current job as cheerleader for the Maricopa County Superior Court.

But even as he was proceeding with trumped up cases against Republicans, Goddard could not be bothered to go after liberals who were caught red handed. Despite clear evidence of guilt, Goddard rolled over, assessed a $5,000 civil fine, and ordered Mainstream Arizona to comply with the law by filing campaign finance reports, which they should have done anyway.

But even this sweetheart deal wasn’t even followed by Mainstream Arizona. According to the Secretary of State’s website, they never filed the reports they were supposed to. You can see by plugging Mainstream Arizona into the Secretary of State search engine for political committees (but make sure you check the box for inactive committees). They registered as a committee but never filed reports.

This makes a deal that reaked of favoritism smell even worse, and it begs the question of why the Attorney General’s office, and Goddard and Funkhouser in particular, did nothing to confirm their consent agreement was followed.

Get rid of outdated notice publishing law for businesses that props up newspapers

There is a silly legal requirement that articles of incorporation and LLC formation documents be published in a newspaper that nobody reads. These laws do nothing but prop up the print media, and Rep. Andy Biggs has a bill that would rid us of this windfall for newspapers.

There are similar archaic requirements for governments notices, but HB 2253 would allow governments to publish certain things online in lieu of print publication. It is eminently sensible, nobody reads these silly small point notices that litter the back pages of newspapers, and this would save cities a lot of money.

But in addition to being good policy it is great politics as it would allow Republicans to inflict significant damage on our political enemies in the print media. And now is the perfect time to push this–with everyone in a budget crunch, saving money is even more attractive than at other times.

Incredibly, our REPUBLICAN Legislature seems to be allowing this rare opportunity to slip through its fingers–the bill failed House Government on a 4 to 5 vote. Now the bill’s sponsor has apparently capitulated to he Arizona Republic and the other forces of darkness–the bill has been amended to have a worthless study committee report back in nearly three years.

Democrats recognize their political enemies, engage them, and do everything they can to undermine them. Republicans lack this killer instinct.

“I Am Rush Limbaugh”

Remember when the Obama administration went after private citizen, Joe Wurzelbacher, aka “Joe the Plumber?”

Remember the response and the campaign that followed?

It’s that time again.

This time The White House is going after Rush Limbaugh. Yes, you heard correct. The Office of President of the United States is targeting a citizen of this country as an opponent. According to Politico,

Top Democrats believe they have struck political gold by depicting Rush Limbaugh as the new face of the Republican Party, a full-scale effort first hatched by some of the most familiar names in politics and now being guided in part from inside the White House.

The strategy took shape after Democratic strategists Stanley Greenberg and James Carville included Limbaugh’s name in an October poll and learned their longtime tormentor was deeply unpopular with many Americans, especially younger voters. Then the conservative talk-radio host emerged as an unapologetic critic of Barack Obama shortly before his inauguration, when even many Republicans were showering him with praise.

Soon it clicked: Democrats realized they could roll out a new GOP bogeyman for the post-Bush era by turning to an old one in Limbaugh, a polarizing figure since he rose to prominence in the 1990s.

Many of us out here in “flyover country” happen agree with citizen Rush. In fact, many of us are willing to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Rush and say the same thing to President Obama.

Where will you stand?

Gilbert Elections

For those following the Gilbert Elections, I’ve set up a separate page here on Sonoran Alliance which details candidate information as well as media coverage of the race.

On March 10th, the voters of Gilbert will head to the polls to choose council and mayoral candidates. Because this is a primary, it expected that four council candidates and two mayoral candidates will head to the general election scheduled in May.

Please feel free to visit the Gilbert Elections page and leave your comments.

P.S. – I would love to see someone start up a Gilbert Issues blog similar to the Mesa Issues blog.

A Profile in Political Courage

Representative Doug QuellandYesterday, Representative Doug Quelland demonstrated political courage when he stopped a bill which would have allowed certain financial institutions to jack up their lines of credit an additional $3,000 and their annual interest rates to, get this, 113 percent!

Quelland voted with three Democrats to stop the measure from reaching committee approval which effectively killed the bill for now.

Other lawmakers were caught off guard and surprised. Representative Andy Biggs:Biggs said he was surprised with the outcome, and he had told the eight committee members the legislation was needed because borrowers seeking unsecured loans typically can’t get a loan from a traditional bank or credit union. He also said the national financial meltdown has made obtaining a loan even more difficult.

“What you have to realize is there are people who need these loans. Where will they turn?” Biggs said. (Arizona Republic)

The answer to Biggs’ question is another question. Do we really want people like this taking loans that they will never repay? Do we really want to see more people get themselves into financial bondage after what we’ve witnessed over the last six months? Have Americans not yet learned a lesson that debt is a bad thing?

Proverbs 22:7 states, “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave of the lender.”

Doug Quelland did the right thing yesterday. As an evangelical, Quelland is practicing what he preaches and for that, I applaud him.

Sheriff Arpaio speaks out against photo speed cameras

Some excerpts from the KTAR article –

Arpaio weighed in on the issue while appearing on News/Talk 92-3 KTAR’s “Jay Lawrence Show” Sunday.

The sheriff said it’s up to attorneys to decide the legality of photo radar, but, “I like to stop people. You can’t spot a dead body in a truck or marijuana or anything else. I like my deputies to give warnings. I don’t like a stupid machine to give you a ticket.”

AZ Dept. of Transportation caught wasting $1000s if not more on an unnecessary airplane

ADOT Board member Delbert Householder flew aboard the plane more than 200 times in the last 5 years, more than twice the number of times any other board member flew

Good investigative reporting from Channel 15 exposing a pathetic waste of taxpayers’ money on unnecessary air travel over the last five years by the AZ Dept. of Transportation. No wonder the state is in a record deficit. Where was oversight by Governor Napolitano? Or did she tacitly approve of this?

Some excerpts –

The Arizona Department of Transportation has grounded its plane just one week after the ABC15 Investigators requested copies of all flight logs, passenger logs and costs associated with the state owned aircraft.

A review of the department records by ABC15 reveals ADOT officials have spent hundreds of thousands of tax dollars flying to board meetings, ribbon cuttings, and award ceremonies in Arizona.

Fuel costs alone totaled more than $560,000 for five years of flying.

Our review of ADOT’s own flight logs revealed more than 2,600 flights in the last five years.

ADOT’s logs revealed 9 flights to pick up board members for a single meeting in Sedona, 12 flights for a meeting in Lake Havasu, and 13 flights for a board meeting in Kingman.

ADOT Board Chairman Delbert Householder has flown aboard the plane 200 times in the last five years, more than twice the number of flights as any other board member.

The logs also show a state-run charity was given free reign to use ADOT’s plane. In the last 2 years, the charity flew 45 times at the taxpayer’s expense. ADOT’s own policy requires other state agencies pay to use the plane, but the charity was not charged for a single flight.

Trust Us…Photo Radar is All About Driver Safety!

Yeah Right.

For those readers who had any lingering doubt about the real reasons we have photo radar, I direct you to a brief article in the Tribune.

Redflex, the real winner in the photo radar scam, sent a lobbyist and count ‘em two PR people down to the Tribune to defend photo radar.

One senses that RedFlex is going to spare no expense protecting it’s cash cow from legislative and citizen efforts to reign in photo radar.

But hey that’s okay…after all it’s all about driver safety.

Hype against Arpaio significantly overblown

Arpaio protesters have been getting more media coverage lately, and for little reason. Overreported in the mainstream media, supposedly “thousands” or “hundreds” depending on which account you read protested against him Saturday. What the articles fail to tell you is about once a year, illegal immigrants and their supporters have a march to support illegal immigration. Last year the turnout was dismal, probably due to the fact that many illegal immigrants have left the state, and Arpaio is now monitoring the parades, so they’d be risking arrest if caught violating the law. Relative to the first illegal immigrant march about three years ago, which sources report had 30,000 protesters, this one was actually sparsely attended.

The Republic’s pro-illegal immigrant liberal columnist E.J. Montini wrote a column yesterday criticizing the protesters for getting their facts wrong, discrediting their argument by trying to portray Arpaio negatively for things that weren’t accurate, like comparing him to a former racist Sheriff (the title of the march was “Stop Immigrant Bashing in Arizona. No More Bull Connors!”):

Joe Arpaio is no “Bull” Connor. Saying so is not only inaccurate. It’s stupid. It diminishes the credibility of those who make the claim. It would be a good thing to stop immigrant bashing in Arizona, but you can’t do so by Arpaio bashing, particularly if your rhetoric doesn’t match the facts.

Many of the illegal immigrants marching in the parade carried signs that blamed Arpaio for inmates’ mental health treatment, something the jails have received failing grades for from the government. Montini should have mentioned this mistaken blame in his article too. The county – Board of Supervisors – is responsible for choosing the mental health provider contracts, not Arpaio.

But for the most part, as the Republic struggles to breathe its last dying gasps before it follows other newspapers like the Tucson Citizen out of business, it is pulling out the stops to bash Arpaio in practically every issue. On Feb. 26, the Republic featured a top-of-the-fold, front page article declaring, “Report: ICE program used by Arpaio a failure.” A few sentences into reading it revealed that it it wasn’t some legitimate report put out by the government or a reputable, well-known organization. It was by “Justice Strategies” out of Brooklyn, NY. What does a little-known organization in another state know about our jails? If you just go to the About Us – Staff page on their website, you’ll see that BOTH of their two staff members are funded by none other than the left wing millionaire George Soros. Why didn’t the Republic report this, in the interests of fairness and exposing bias? If Soros is funding a study, you can guarantee which way it will turn out. One of their founders, Kevin Pranis, is co-founder of the NY Moratorium Project, which means he wants to eliminate prison altogether. “In 1996 Pranis established the Prison Moratorium Project for the express purpose of working to eliminate all prisons in the United States — particularly private-sector, for-profit prisons. Affiliated with the U.S. chapter of the Socialist International.” He’s also Former Youth Section Chair of the Democratic Socialists of America.

So there you have it. An organization that wants to eliminate prisons entirely has concluded that the 287g program permitting local law enforcement to arrest illegal immigrants “doesn’t work.” Is there *any* program Arpaio could implement that *would* work? According to Justice Strategies, no program would work since their ultimate goal is to get rid of jails and prisons. If they were honest, they would call themselves “Eliminate Incarceration.”

So don’t believe all the hype against Arpaio. It’s just the usual annual clamor by illegal immigrants, now funded by Soros. Arpaio isn’t “anti-immigrant,” he’s anti-illegal immigration, just like the vast majority of law-abiding Arizonans. To try and confuse the two is deceptive and dishonest. Arpaio is doing his job. If the Soros types out there don’t like it, then they need to get the law changed.

Hindsight is Romney

Watching the CPAC online the last few days has been amazing. Many of the speakers have reflected the mood of the Republican party which can be summed up in one word – MOBILIZING.

I was especially impressed with the speech delivered by former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney, who bore a striking resemblance to Ronald Reagan.

This got me doing the 20/20 is hindsight exercise and I couldn’t help but think that Romney would have been one of the only leaders able to get the country out of this mess. After all, he stepped into several crisis in the past only to stabilize and correct the problem – Winter Olympics.

Although I was a Mike Huckabee guy here in Arizona, if I had to make the decision again, I would choose Mitt Romney. And despite the jabs between both candidates, Huckabee would have best filled in the role of Vice President. (And yes, I watch his show religiously every weekend.)

2012 could not be here soon enough!
