CD-5 Debate: Schweikert vs. Mitchell

Friday, the East Valley Tribune hosted a debate between Congressman Harry Mitchell and conservative Republican challenger, David Schweikert.

Here is the link to the video of that debate courtesy of The East Valley Tribune.

David Schweikert has a clear command of the issues while Harry Mitchell tends to ramble on over superfluous details.

AFP Rally Draws Crowd on Capitol Steps

AFP supporters protest taxes and rally in support of free market economics on the steps of the capitol.

The Americans for Prosperity rally this afternoon drew a large crowd on the steps of the capitol building in Washington DC.  Signs with slogans such as “Stop Obamunism” and “I am AFP” dotted the crowd.

In front of hundreds of cheering spectators AFP President Tim Phillips expounded on the benefits of capitalism and free market enterprise.  He also excoriated house speaker Nancy Pelosi (D), following a chorus boos, for her recent disparaging remarks about increasing the size and scope of government oversight of the economy.  Several other speakers also spoke of the benefits of the free market and energy independence.  Specifically the issue of off-shore drilling was mentioned, which caused the crowd to spontaneously begin chanting, “drill, drill, drill”.

The subject of taxes was also hit hard, with Phillips espousing the idea that the way to improve the economic outlook of the country is the lower, not raise taxes especially considering the current economic developments of the past week.  The crowd greeted this proposition with a round of loud cheers and applause.  Arizona AFP Director Tom Jenney who was in attendance said, “It was a great day.  We had hundreds of people out there to defend the free market and to make sure that congress get the message.  This crisis is a government created crisis and we will not be silent while politicians use the crisis as an excuse for a massive expansion of government power.”

Veterans Endorse Schweikert

For Immediate Release: October 10, 2008

Veterans group offers enthusiastic endorsement of Schweikert

Scottsdale, AZ – The National Vietnam and Gulf War Veterans Coalition has announced its endorsement to Fifth District Congressional candidate David Schweikert.  The Coalition cites Schweikert’s strong positions on the treatment and care of veterans, national security issues such as the War on Terror and U.S. border security as well as Schweikert’s support for increased domestic energy production.

“I’m proud to accept this endorsement. This organization represents hundreds of thousands of veterans and I’m honored that they would support my bid to serve in the U.S. Congress,” Schweikert said.

“This demonstrates that veterans’ issues transcend partisan politics.  I’m very disappointed that the current holder of this seat has adopted the attitude that he and he alone speaks for veterans.  That is clearly not the case.  Congress has a long tradition of setting aside partisan squabbles when it comes to veterans’ issues, and I urge Harry Mitchell to follow that tradition.” continued Schweikert.

The Coalition is comprised of more than 80 veterans’ organizations and advocacy groups representing more than 250,000 veterans and their families totaling more than two million voters across the country.

Can you say Yes on 102

The main talking point for people opposed to Prop 102 is that same-sex marriage is already illegal in Arizona. The Supreme Court of Connecticut just pointed out why a law is not enough. The court just ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in the state. For more information on Prop 102 visit YesForMarriage.com.

Defending the American Dream Summit in Washington DC

Good morning, I’m sitting here at the Defending the American Dream Summit put on by the Americans for Prosperity Foundation http://defendingthedream.org/beta/.  Thus far its been well worth getting up at the absurdly early time of 3am Arizona time.  The Sam Adams Alliance http://www.samadamsalliance.com/ put on the first event which focused on creating online groups via blogging in order to help influence local politics.  Examples used have been the defeat of the DREAM Act in 2006 and the decline of the newspaper industry, especially as it relates to investigative reporting which has now become a pivotal part of blogging (i.e. public records requests).  Also highlighted was the fact that the left has used the internet to successfully create groups such as MoveOn.org which have used their resources to bring various leftists groups together in ways that they would not have done on their own.

Later this afternoon the summit will move to the capitol to demonstrate in favor of reducing the size of government and lessening the tax burden on citizens.  The importances of this is demonstrated clearly by the current financial debacle that has been caused by the liberal tax and spend policies of the left through institutions such as Freddie Mac and Fannie May.  Stay tuned for updates today and tomorrow.
