Schweikert Calls on Mitchell to Return Tainted Campaign Contributions

Scottsdale, AZ – Congressional candidate David Schweikert is calling on Harry Mitchell to return nearly $50,000 in tainted campaign contributions from two of his embattled Democrat House leaders.

“The people of the Fifth District expect a certain level of competence and integrity from their elected officials,” Schweikert said.  “In a very short period of time, Harry Mitchell has let them down repeatedly.”

Campaign finance records show that Mitchell has accepted $20,000 in Political Action Committee dollars from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  Pelosi is under fire today after news reports surfaced showing that she directed nearly $100,000 from her “PAC to the Future” fund to a company owned by her husband.  Mitchell’s campaign received money from that same PAC.

In addition, Mitchell has accepted $28,000 from House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel, who is under ethics investigation for failure to pay taxes over a period of 20 years.

Accepting tainted political contributions was a practice that was at the heart of corruption allegations leveled at congress in 2006.

“This is more than mere hypocrisy, this is arrogance,” Schweikert said.  “Charles Rangel heads the committee that writes U.S. tax law, but he’s under an ethics probe for not paying his own taxes.  Nancy Pelosi has diverted money to her husband’s business from a campaign committee she controls.  Funds from these tainted sources are paying for Harry Mitchell’s campaign.  Voters in the Fifth District deserve better than this kind of disregard for ethics.  It’s been six days since Mitchell was called upon to return tainted donations and the response has been a deafening silence.  He should return these funds and dispel the air of hypocrisy that hangs over his campaign.”

Decline in newspaper influence hits Southern Arizona

Espresso Pundit covered the news that Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and Sheriff Joe Arpaio decided not to seek the endorsements of Arizona’s largest paper. We now have news that Legislative District 30 House Republican nominee Frank Antenori is not seeking the endorsement or the Arizona Daily Star or the Tucson Citizen. In a letter to the media Antenori states:

In going over the schedule for the general election I have decided to forgo the editorial endorsement interviews from the Arizona Daily Star and the Tucson Citizen. My time will be more effectively utilized reaching voters in District 30 directly by walking door to door and attending local community events.

He continues:

I have made myself available to the public and the media for many months now and have discussed the issues of interest to voters in several partisan and bi-partisan forums. The Star has covered only one of these forums that I know of and I don’t believe that the Citizen has covered any.

The full text of Antenori’s statement is available on his web site. Frank is in a fairly safe district and is working hard to reach voters directly so the move is not the end of the paper’s influence. That is unless be wins and his position catches on among candidates in future elections.

Speaking of the decline of newspapers, The McClatchy Company, is having so much trouble they have had to restructure their debt. They do not have any papers in Arizona but have some in California, the most famous being the Sacramento Bee.

Laurie Roberts Rips Arizona Delegation

Laurie Roberts

Even Laurie Roberts with the Arizona Republic recognizes Monday’s vote as purely political.

Roberts, who supports the $700 Billion vote, especially takes her angst out on Harry Mitchell who she believes should not have wavered between a “yes” and “no” vote, broke ranks from the “crack economists” in the district and voted “yes” on the massive bailout package.

Meanwhile, every Arizonan in the House voted no, employing masterful excuses. That the deal was rushed. That it isn’t needed. That it aids fat cats and hey, what about the little guy?

Except that this wasn’t about fat cats or the little guy. This was about re-election. Just five weeks before they put themselves in voters’ hands, our leaders were bombarded with calls from all those crack economists in their districts, demanding that they vote no.

‘Considering $700 billion is at stake,’ Democrat Harry Mitchell would later explain, ‘I believe taxpayers deserve better.’

That sounds great, except that Mitchell and Democrat Gabrielle Giffords appeared ready to vote yes if enough others joined them in sticking their necks out.”

With allies on the left now exposing Mitchell’s and Giffords’ votes as high-cost political poker, both freshmen Democrats will have to decide whether to take a gamble on protecting the people and policies who gave us this crisis or protecting their re-election bids.

Rove on the Vote

Hat tip to Politicker AZ for this revealing video featuring Karl Rove describing the machinations on the floor of the House on Monday. In this audio, Rove explains how Pelosi demonstrated “leadership” by allowing vulnerable Democrats like Gabrielle Giffords and Harry Mitchell to vote “No” for purely political reasons.
