Rudy strikes back

I have to believe that winning is a winning strategy.

The ad paid for by the Giuliani campaign attempts to link Clinton to another ad, paid for by MoveOn.org, a liberal anti-war group, that ran in the Times on Monday. The MoveOn ad accused Petraeus of “cooking the books” on the Iraq war and played off his name, asking, “General Petraeus or General Betray Us?”

…The Giuliani ad accuses Clinton, a New York senator, of participating in a “character attack” against Petraeus, citing her comments during a congressional hearing that the general’s progress report on Iraq required a “willing suspension of disbelief.”

In case you are keeping score, Clinton questions the honesty of a decorated military commander, but fugitive, embezzler and major Democrat fundraiser Norman Hsu get the benefit of the doubt.GenLiesPower

What if MoveOn.org had existed 65 years ago?  Would they trash General Lies and Power?

The New Yorks Times wants me to subscribe

Talk about bad political timing.  The New York Times sent me a subscription letter the same week they publish the despicable MoveOn.org ad.  Instead of trashing it, I sent this reply:

Dear Subscription Dept:

Regarding your subscription offer, I have no desire to read your blame America first, hyper-partisan “news” paper.

Thank you.

The best part is, I used their postage paid return envelope.

Unwarranted Cover

Freedom’s Watch, the group that has run some great ads demonstrating the importance of the U.S. effort in Iraq, has another effective ad airing.  It takes a broadside at MoveOn.org for the New York Times ad that criticized General Petraeus.  In the opening screenshot, the narrator intones that “political leaders and newspapers have been condemning the radical liberal group MoveOn.org…” while you see a graphic of the United States with the photos of six people: Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ), Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE), Sen. John Rockefeller (D-WV), Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and…. (record scratch as the music stops)… Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ). Huh?

(To see the ad go here)

It reminds me of the Sesame Street game “which one is not like the other?”  Why a good, conservative (presumably Republican) group would highlight a freshman liberal Democrat Congresswoman among five Senators is beyond me.  But it certainly doesn’t help the Republican efforts to unseat her next year. In fact, it provides her unwarranted political cover.

The only possible nexus is that it is rumored that the political consultant group Jamestown Associates is producing the ads.  They have had close ties to former Rep. Jim Kolbe, who was a bit of a fan of Gabby in the last election.  Are they angling for some business from Giffords?  Time will tell.

Arizona Choose Life Plates Lawsuit Moves Forward

license-frontpage.jpg

The Arizona Life Coalition (an organization I helped found and was once intimately involved with) has been able to move a federal lawsuit forward in an effort to receive approval for license plates that state, “Choose Life.” (read story)

The Arizona Life Coalition filed the suit in federal court in 2002 after the Arizona License Plate Commission arbitrarily refused to approve the plate and gave no reason for the denial when members of the coalition asked.

If the plates are approved, Arizonans would be able to purchase and renew the plates for $25. Seventeen of those dollars would be provided back to the Arizona Life Coalition where it would be disbursed to the various crisis pregnancy centers around Arizona.

Thanks to the efforts of the Center for Arizona Policy and the Alliance Defense Fund, the lawsuit is in good hands. However, the road ahead will be tough as the coalition will likely face liberal pro-abortion judges.

Somebody’s watching Big Brother

For too long, tax and spenders have had a free ride in local government.  That gravy train is over and they are screaming:

Big spenders abound in E.V. government
Paul Giblin, Tribune
Big spenders abound in government halls across the East Valley, according to a government watchdog group that analyzed the spending habits of county and municipal officials.

…“A lot of these city councils have been entirely under the impression that nobody is watching, that there’s no spending limits.” said Tom Jenny, executive director of the foundation.

The foundation’s first county and municipal scorecard produced some unexpected results.

For example, most of Mesa’s council members were christened as friends of big government. At the same time, all of Scottsdale’s council members were named either ally of the taxpayer or friend of the taxpayer.

Mesa Mayor Keno Hawker said the foundation’s analysts need to attend a few Mesa City Council meetings, because their conclusions are seriously flawed.

“I am not a friend of big government…” Hawker said.

Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross said the scorecard validates the Scottsdale council’s careful attention to budget matters.

…The federation’s rankings of Tempe’s elected officials ranged from “not bad” to “friend of big government.”

…The scorecard has a few shortcomings, Jenney said.

First, analysts compared each government’s 2007-08 budget and tax policies to its 2006-07 budget and tax figures. So, councils or boards that made moderate increases to previously bloated budgets or excessive tax rates escaped detection for their previous spending binges.

A truer picture will emerge after several years of tracking, Jenney said.

Second, analysts had no means to objectively score the impact of local government “boondoggles,” such as over-priced arts centers or new extravagant City Halls, because even excessive expenditures are camouflaged by much larger overall city budgets, he said.

Similarly, the impact of “corporate welfare” handouts and tax abatements awarded to business owners and developers are hidden within multi-million-dollar municipal budgets.

Giving props where they’re due

There is a lot to criticize Senator John McCain on, but he deserves praise for standing-up to left-wing hate speech:

ARLINGTON, VA — U.S. Senator John McCain made the following statement today:

Senator Clinton said that believing General Petraeus’ testimony requires a ‘willing suspension of disbelief.’ I think it willingly suspends disbelief to not repudiate an advertisement run by a radical left wing organization that impugns and dishonors the integrity of a man who has served his nation with dedication all of his life. If you’re not tough enough to repudiate a scurrilous, outrageous attack such as that, then I don’t know how you’re tough enough to be President of the United States.

6 years ago, MoveOn.org and the DailyKos were fringe movements.  Now they are the mainstream of the Democrat Party.  Although, they’re probably to the right of the New York Times.

Thank You! – Sonoran Alliance #1 Blog In Arizona

Thanks to all our readers, writers and commentators for making Sonoran Alliance the number one conservative blogsite in Arizona!

Also thanks to Arizona Political Intel – one of our strong partner allies – on the nice posting explaining our ranking!

For those who don’t know the story behind Sonoran Alliance, this was a vision I shared with the fellow blog/creator of ProLifeBlogs.com late in 2005 while I was the Executive Director of Arizona Right to Life. It wasn’t until February 2005 that the site went live and I began adding writers.

Today, we have approximately ten contributing writers and have approximately 11,500 visits per month. Our growth has been constant and we are considered one of the premier conservative insider sites in Arizona.

Now the offer. If you think you have something to contribute, drop me an email at sonoranalliance@cox.net to find out more. We are always looking for great writers with strong conservative credentials and ideas.

Again, thanks for making us number one in the Arizona conservative blogs.

Phoenix elections.

The decisive reelection of Phil Gordon was no surprise. In District 1 Thelda Williams met the 50% plus 1 requirement by a comfortable margin to avoid a run off. Claude Mattox was unopposed in District 5 and ran away with 97% of the vote. All of the propositions passed except Prop 2, a pay raise for the major and council.

The surprise came in Districts 3 and 7. In District 3 the establishment candidate Maria Baier did not reach the 50% mark and will face Jon Altmann in the November 6th run-off.

In District 7 the well-connected and well-franked Laura Pastor received a strong challenge from Michael Nowakowski. They will also face each other on November 6th.

Down south in Tucson there were no surprises. The race there is a partisan election but the Democrats did not field a viable candidate for mayor. Current Mayor Walkup was unopposed in the Republican side and will most likely sail to an easy victory in November over the Green Party candidate Dave Croteau.

In Ward 1 Regina Romero easily beat Ken Green in the Democratic primary. Ward 2 was very similar with Glassman handily winning against Reus. Shirley Scott was unopposed in the primary for Ward 4.

The two Republican council candidates ran unopposed in the primary. Lori Oien will face Glassman in the Ward 2 general election in November. Dan Spahr will challenge Scott in Ward 4. Oien seems to engender the most hope among Republicans but the fact that all of the voters in Tucson get to vote on each ward does not help. The city has a strong advantage in Democratic registration.

McCain’s comeback.

Or should we say his dead-cat-bounce. After winning the debate in New Hampshire, according to many reports, McCain has moved into a tenuous third place.

City of Phoenix – Unofficial Election Results

City of Phoenix

The City of Phoenix has conducted an election for Mayor, Council and a number of issues.

Unofficial election results are located here.

A couple of quick observations:

1) Democratic Mayor, Phil Gordon, will continue his reign.

2) Liberal Republican, Maria Baier, appears to have gathered up enough votes to beat her opponents but NOT win her seat without going to a run-off against conservative Republican, Jon Altman. A preview of the 2008 elections???

3) Phoenicians have turned down a raise for the mayor and council but have backed an increase in taxes to pay for more public safety. This demonstrates that joe citizen has a healthy despise of giving more money to elected officials but still wants their taxes kept at the local level to pay for public goods.

What say ye?

PULLEN CALLS FOR MOVEON.ORG APOLOGY

PHOENIX, AZ – “I understand that the people at Moveon.org had hoped the Democrat Congress would have surrendered in Iraq, surrendered to the terrorists and apologized to the rest of the world for Americans being American long before now – but they need to learn they can’t always get their way,” said Randy Pullen, Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party.

“Democrat US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is doing her best to repeal President Bush’s tax cuts and bring an end to the economic growth that has marked the last decade – Moveon.org might still get their way and the Welfare Society might still return,” Pullen said.

“Democrat US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has surrendered to anyone in the Middle East with at least a slingshot and a bad attitude causing doubt among troops and confidence among the enemy – so Moveon.org may yet get its way if Democrats can pull-out a pre-election defeat from the jaws of victory,” warned Pullen.

“Moveon.org’s stunt today was even more cowardly than Mrs. Pelosi or Reid,” Pullen said.  “While giving Democrats cover during congressional testimony, the Democrats ultra-liberal front-group took grandstanding shots at a decorated soldier and unwavering patriot who has dedicated his life to serving his nation.

“Moveon.org ought to apologize to the American people and Democrats, like Arizona Democrat freshmen members of Congress, Gabrielle Giffords and Harry Mitchell, should return any and all campaign contributions received from this group,” Pullen said.  “I think the Democrats might actually be better off taking money from fugitives from justice than pinning their election hopes on a group better described as a bunch of thugs, rather than a special interest group. Moveon.org and their Democrat cohorts will smear anyone, say anything or do whatever it takes to win elections no matter who they have to hurt in the process.

“Just when you think Democrat politics has reached rock-bottom, it turns out they can sink even further,” Pullen said.

Gallardo cries discrimination.

YouTube Preview Image

Last Thursday state representatives Russell Pearce and Steve Gallardo appeared on the Lou Dobbs show. The piece is mostly Dobbs and Gallardo. Gallardo constantly plays the race card with no examples or evidence of how the “bad written” law is discriminatory. Dobbs directly ask Gallardo how, according to a new ACLU lawsuit, the law denies due process. Gallardo does not even try to address that. Then Dobbs asks him what is discriminatory about the employers sanction bill. Gallardo repeats the charge but again fails to answer the question. Despite the fact that federal law already covers discrimination Gallardo seems to want federal law repeated in HB 2779. Dobbs calls his bluff, saying his race baiting has not place in the discussion.

BTW: Gallardo is minority, not majority, whip. The middle of the tape has poor audio quality so it is not your computer.

AZ Republic token conservative columnists aren’t conservative and their loyalty is to the paper

Have you ever noticed how the Republic editorial board turns to its pet in-house so-called conservative writers (about two out of twelve or however many editorial board members there are — namely Robert Robb and Doug MacEachern) to slam conservatives so it will be considered more legitimate?  These are nevertheless obvious contract hits.  Witness MacEachern writing the infamous editorial slamming J.D. Hayworth in his race last year against Harry Mitchell, saying he was a “bully,” etc.  Never mind Napolitano being a bully for renaming the Squaw Peak Parkway and bullying the Chamber of Commerce for an endorsement, or Goddard for ginning up investigations of gas companies and Republican politicians that turned out to be bogus.  Or Robb slamming County Attorney Thomas this past week for informing the public that Goddard is stonewalling by refusing to allow Sheriff Arpaio’s deputies direct, unfiltered access to witnesses at the Attorney General’s Office as part of the joint bribery investigation Arpaio and Thomas are doing.  I saw in the paper today Thomas’s office has written a letter to the editor, noting that they had to file suit to stop this even though Goddard, in a 2005 article in the Arizona Attorney, stated that Thomas’s legal position is right, and the AG’s Office doesn’t even follow the procedures he’s now insisting on for himself. The letter asserts that Thomas and Arpaio made numerous attempts to meet with Goddard’s attorney to resolve this privately but were unsuccessful – doesn’t the public have the right to know about this high-profile investigation? What conservative is next in the crosshairs of MacEachern and Robb, who do they want to destroy next to help their cronies at the Republic ensure Arizona remains in the control of a Democrat governor and Democrat attorney general….Dean Martin and Jan Brewer?

Unfortunately, guys like Doug MacEachern and Robert Robb are not conservatives, but career opportunists who prove the point that there are only two kinds of people who write for the Arizona Republic:  liberals and those who constantly fear being fired by liberals.

DUH!
Democrats finally realize taking money from fugitives from justice is bad

Phoenix, AZ – “I’m amazed that Democrat candidates for president need to release statements pledging not take money from fugitives from justice,” said Randy Pullen, chairman of the Arizona Republican Party. “I’m pleased this is now official policy for another leading Democrat US Senator running for President, and I believe it should be the policy of all Democrat candidates running for office, but I think it’s also sad that Democrats today have put themselves in a position where this sort of policy position has to be made.”

Pullen’s comments came a day after Senator Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut) released a statement stating “It is the policy of my campaign to refuse to accept or possess campaign contributions raised, solicited, or delivered by fugitives from justice.”  Recently, Democrats from Hillary Rodham Clinton to Barack Obama to Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell to the Democrat National Committee have admitted receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent campaign contributions from 15-year fugitive Norman Hsu.  Hsu bilked over one million dollars from unsuspecting individuals in fake investment schemes and later fled prosecution while still raising major sums for Democrat causes.

“Taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from fugitives from justice might not be common sense to Democrats, but it is to the rest of America,” said Pullen.  “But I thought that there might be other areas where Democrats are just missing the boat – so I spoke with Republican leaders from around the state and we’re offering up this short ‘Top-Ten’ list of common sense things we’ve determined your average Democrat Party Leader, presidential candidate and or Member of Congress might not have figured out yet:

“10. If you don’t take money that isn’t yours, you won’t have to hide it in your freezer.

“9. Investment creates opportunity, not taxes – and certainly not the government.

“8. Surrender is never an option… not to terrorists, not to anyone.

“7. A secure America is a safe America.

“6. Money for schools should be spent in the classroom – on our kids.

“5. You can’t tax and spend your way to prosperity.

“4. Arizona ranks #1 in the nation in rape, car theft, armed robbery and violent assault… maybe it’s time Democrats stopped worrying about letting felons vote and started worrying about why there are so many felons.

“3. What children learn in school is more important than where they go to school.

“2. Democrat leaders negotiating with state-sponsors of terrorism is not a path to peace.

“1. Working hard and dreaming big, there is much we can do to help make Arizona an even greater place to call home – but it doesn’t involve bigger government, higher taxes, felons voting, or the status quo.  It involves common sense solutions that put Arizona first, each time, every time.”

“If the Democrats can realize that it’s bad to take money from criminals, perhaps they may eventually see the light and realize that the same is true with the taxpayers,” quipped Pullen.

Why is a Catholic Jesuit group featuring Napolitano as a speaker?

A Catholic friend of mine sent me this -

I am personally offended that a Catholic group (see the “Who we are” section) would extend this invitation to Napolitano.  And I think it shows extraordinarily poor taste for Napolitano to accept this invitation given the disdain she has shown for principles Catholics hold dear.  Of course I am referring to her extreme pro-abortion record, to wit, she refused to defend our partial birth abortion ban in court even though she was statutorily obligated to as AG, she rolled over for the judges when they sent that girl to Kansas for a late term abortion that could not be obtained here, and she vetoed a bill that would have protected Catholic church affiliated-employers from being forced to offer contraceptive coverage against the tenets of their faith, a clear violation of the right of religious freedom.

And I might add, what about far leftist Rabbi Michael Lerner? Why are they joking about inviting Rush Limbaugh fans, is that supposed to be funny? It’s offensive.

Gov. Janet Napolitano lunch at the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Phoenix, Central at Adams, Tuesday October 2 — noon to 2 p.m. Janet Napolitano needs no introduction. She is just one of the most popular governors in the history of the state, and a Jesuit product to boot, a graduate of the University of Santa Clara. She will talk with us about the state’s burning questions, immigration and health care — and whatever other compelling issues that are live when she meets with us for lunch at noon. And, we hope, she will answer some of our burning questions about Arizona’s future. You can sign up here — and with a credit card — pay for your place(s) at the governor’s luncheon. Seating ($32 a plate) is limited. You can also sign up here for the whole series at a big discount.

Rabbi Michael Lerner at Paradise Valley H.S. Auditorium, 3950 E. Bell Road, Phoenix 85032 4 p.m. Sunday November 18 — an interfaith event that we will co-sponsor with the Arizona Ecumenical Council, the Arizona Interfaith Network, and other faith groups around the state. Rabbi Lerner is a full-time rabbi at the Beyt Tikkun synagogue in Berkeley, California, the editor of Tikkun Magazine and the founder and director of The Network of Spiritual Progressives. His book The Left Hand of Godwas a national best-seller in 2006, and he gets more speaking requests than he can fill. He’s only coming to Phoenix because JAAZ has promised to help him spread his message here. Like our Hans Küng (who visited us in November 2005), Rabbi Lerner wants to get all the religions pulling together for a better world – not squabbling about “who’s number one.” He’d like JAAZ members to bring in a wide range of people: students, faculty, the young, the old and the in-between, professionals, union members, Democrats, Greens, Republicans, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists, people who have or have not already read some of Rabbi Lerners’ work, people of financial means or people financially struggling, people interested in peace, ecology, and human rights. (Did we leave anyone out? Rush Limbaugh fans? We’d like them to come, too!) WE ARE APPEALING TO ALL JAAZ MEMBERS TO HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN. PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS. You can sign up here with a credit card and reserve your places for the Michael Lerner event. You can also sign up here for the whole series (at a discount).
Tom Fox, longtime editor of NCR, at Paradise Valley HS Auditorium, 4 p.m. Sunday December 2 In a recent email, this emeritus editor and publisher of the award-winning National Catholic Reporter, writes: “Since leaving NCR, I have allowed myself the luxury of reading more widely in spiritual matters, and have pretty much flown the coup into a kind of Zen-like Ed Hays/Albert Nolan/Ken Wilber stratosphere. “As for our loving old assembly of traditions we call the Catholic Church, I see it in great need, its greatest challenge being the reformulation of its teachings in order to touch, converse with, maybe in, just a bit, guide the postmodern mind/soul. And that’s what I would choose to talk about in Phoenix. “To get a better sense of my own spirit wanderings you might go to the NCR Cafe website at www.ncrcafe.org and find the link to ‘all pod casts.’ There you will see a list of the people I have been conversing with in recent months. What I do is seek out what I consider to be ‘enlightened’ people, mostly spiritual guides, but occasional others as well.” [Tom sounds like a Catholic Bill Moyers, doesn't he?] You can sign up here for the Tom Fox talk. You can also sign up here for the whole discounted series.
Jesuit Robert Taft, Roman scholar/wit at Paradise Valley HS Auditorium on January 13, Sunday at 4 p.m. Robert Taft is a New England Province Jesuit who has taught and pursued his scholarship for 43 years in Rome. By dint of his travels in Eastern Europe and his vast erudition, he long ago became one of the Vatican’s principal experts on Eastern rite churches. A list of his learned publications fill 14 pages in his c.v. He is also something of a great human being, with an emphasis on the word “human.” The Vatican reporter John Allen has called Taft “a cross between Yves Congar and Lenny Bruce…the kind of man who, during a three block walk to dinner on a wintry Roman night, can move seamlessly from singing bawdy English drinking songs, to explaining why the Orthodox misinterpret the Fourth Crusade, to praising the Arnold Schwarzenegger shoot-’em-up classic True Lies.” We’re bringing him all the way from Rome to give us an unsparing view of Orthodox/Catholic ecumenism today — and what can be done to advance it. You can sign up here for Father Taft’s talk. You can also sign up here for the whole series (at a discount).
Jesuit Roger Haight, on major Jesus questions, 4 p.m. Sunday February 17 at Paradise H.S. Auditorium, Phnx Haight’s has a real scholar’s courage to face up to some of the major questions that thinking Catholics, indeed, thinking Christians, are asking about Jesus these days. “Is Christ the world’s only savior?” “How should the Catholic Church relate to other religions?” “What is the role of a Christian missionary in non-Christian lands?” His very asking of these questions has made Rome nervous. Indeed, Haight has been given “a Notification” — something a little short of a condemnation for heresy — by the Holy Office and told he may not teach in a Catholic university. That bothered the entire board of the Catholic Theological Society of America, which defended Haight’s work. Indeed, Haight is a former president of the CTSA. The Notificazione doesn’t seem to bother Haight. He teaches now at Union Theological Seminary in New York, and lives with his Jesuit brothers at America magazine while he continues to write and speak around the nation, as he will be speaking to us, helping us think (and re-think) our theology. You can sign up here for Father Haight’s talk. You can also sign up here for the whole series (at a discount).
Franciscan Richard Rohr on the kind of Jesus who speaks to our times — at Paradise H.S. Auditorium, 4 p.m. Sunday March 2 Richard Rohr is founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, N.M. Last December 18, he told National Public Radio… “I believe in mystery and multiplicity. To religious believers this may sound almost pagan. But I don’t think so. My very belief and experience of a loving and endlessly creative God has led me to trust in both. “I’ve had the good fortune of teaching and preaching across much of the globe, while also struggling to make sense of my experience in my own tiny world. This life journey has led me to love mystery and not feel the need to change it or make it un-mysterious. This has put me at odds with many other believers I know who seem to need explanations for everything. “Religious belief has made me comfortable with ambiguity. “Hints and guesses,” as T.S. Eliot would say. I often spend the season of Lent in a hermitage, where I live alone for the whole 40 days. The more I am alone with the Alone, the more I surrender to ambivalence, to happy contradictions and seeming inconsistencies in myself and almost everything else, including God. Paradoxes don’t scare me anymore.” Father Rohr will be coming directly from his Lenten retreat to meet all of his friends, old and new, in Phoenix. You can sign up here for Father Rohr’s presentation. You can also sign up here for the whole series (at a discount).
Wendell Rossman, philanthropist, at Paradise H.S. Auditorium, 4 p.m. Sunday April 13 In retirement, Mr. Rossman, the architect (now retired) who has designed many of Phoenix’s churches, has been doing research and a great deal of thinking about ways of bringing humanity into the penal systerm in Maricopa County — i.e., into our Lord High Sheriff’s jail. Before his talk, in future newsletters, we will have more to report about Mr. Rossman’s ideas (which we think are mightily informed by the Gospel). For now, a teaser: He says, “There are currently 37,000 inmates in the county jail system. Many of them do not belong there.”

Bob Walkup advocates for gays in the military.

Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup is running for reelection. He does not have any Republican primary or Democratic general opposition. I guess that has freed him from traditional politics so he can pursue the important issues facing Tucson, like gays in the military.

     Go Bob!
