Arizona Politics for Conservatives: Sonoran Alliance
Arizona Politics, News, Commentary and Information with a Blatantly Conservative Worldview Presented by an Alliance of Writers, Activists, Consultants and Government Insiders.
Apparently Ray Arvizu and Mary Rose Wilcox are linked to a news site (see paragraph 9) recently set up to Support the Arizona employer sanctions bill, according to an article in the July issue of Latino Perspectives. It is not surprising since Arvizu has a public relations firm and probably knows how to get a site up and running quickly.
This has been going around some of the other blogs.
Worth reading if you haven’t had a chance yet, gives you a glimpse of where the state Republican Party is going under the new leadership.

by Randy Pullen
My fellow Arizonans, my fellow Americans, I believe our state and our nation stand today at a crossroads in history. The rhetoric in the media of recent years describes us as a politically divided nation, almost equal in number of Republicans and Democrats, with our party nominees (and in fact our parties themselves) competing for those few undecided voters remaining in the middle.
Today I reject that notion because two very important things have happened.
First, our next generation of Republican leadership from city halls to court houses to state houses to the White House has largely united in one voice behind our belief in both America and the American people. We have shown our faith in the American dream for all, and we are putting forth real, common-sense ideas on how to transform those dreams into reality.
Though our Democrat opponents and many of our liberal friends in the media often ballyhoo when Republicans disagree, this much is true: today’s Republican Party has refocused itself as the party of ideas and courage, and as the party of a bright future for Arizona and for America.
Here in Arizona, our leaders have said with unwavering resolve that it is no longer acceptable for our state’s brave veterans to suffer under a system of neglect and incompetence. We have not just exposed the wrongs of our government but are busy crafting solutions to protect our veterans and honor their past service.
Our Republican leaders have identified the failings of our state’s bureaucracy charged with protecting our most vulnerable children. We have confronted an unwieldy and defensive bureaucracy and demanded accountability and change – which now seems clear will come because of the resolve of our Republican lawmakers here in Arizona.
We have, and continue to, reach out to community leaders and business organizations to seek real-world ideas and innovative means with which to further spur Arizona’s economy to create new jobs, new opportunities and new futures for families in every county and corner of our state. We confront head-on the environmental challenges of water, effective land use, and responsible growth to protect the natural wonders of our state and the quality of life of our neighbors and friends.
And our Republican elected officials at the local and state level are leaders in education, seeking to transform our schools to places of true learning where the hopes and dreams of children may be nurtured. Arizona is a leader in education innovation with charter schools, performance testing, and tax credits; all Republican ideas. Each step we take for education reform promises a brighter future not just for our state, but for each individual child whom we are determined to serve as if he or she were our own.
Our Republican leaders today do these things not simply because of the jobs they have been elected to, or the oaths of office they have taken, but because of the tremendous dedication they have for the positions they have been elected to hold and the commitment they share to the people they serve. They are men and women with ideas working closely with doctors and teachers, parents and small businesspeople, senior citizens, veterans, families and individuals from every walk of life in a great partnership toward a stronger Arizona.
Second, I reject the equally divided notion put forth because of the direction taken by today’s Democrat Party. Special interests and 15-second sound bytes now take precedent over governing, where politics impedes progress at almost every turn for Democrats.
A recent Gallup Poll showed the Democrat majority in Congress has now driven public confidence in Congress to an all-time low of just 14-percent – lower than before Republicans wrested Congress from the Democrats in 1994 and lower than during the Watergate era. One would have to go back to the Continental Congress in 1780 to find a lower confidence level.
Today, the Democrats in Congress have no charismatic president to lead them off on quixotic journeys into misguided domestic policy. Today, they have achieved their 14-percent approval rating all by themselves. Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi proudly negotiates with state-sponsors of terrorism, placing in jeopardy not only Israel (our closest democratic ally in the region), but undermining nearly single handedly America’s diplomatic efforts in the Middle East in our crusade to stamp our terror. Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid routinely declares that America has lost it’s war against terror in Iraq, giving aid and comfort to the enemy while our brave men and women in uniform fight to protect a fledgling democracy from brutal Islamic fascists and keep their reach from extending to America’s shores once again.
The new Democrat Congress has already called for the largest tax hike in American history, has broken it’s promise on ending the secrecy behind the practice of spending billions of dollars on “earmarked” pork-barrel projects, is set to repeal the Bush tax cuts (that have spurred strong economic growth for six years), have broken their promise to address skyrocketing gas prices, and are set to introduce massive new tax hikes that will reduce investment and cost thousands upon thousands of jobs across America.
While Republicans have learned the lessons of mistakes made in the majority (and, mind you, there were many, many victories and achievements to be proud of, as well), Democrats have reaffirmed their allegiance to the Liberal Left. Not only in matters of Iraq and the war on terror, but in domestic and economic policy, as well. Those who bought and paid for their campaigns and election efforts in 2006 are being handsomely rewarded – only it isn’t the American people, it’s the liberal special interests, which will ultimately reap the benefits.
The Democrat leaders in Congress are banking their entire political fortunes on the defeat of their own nation, and the Democrat candidates for President have become pessimistic naysayers with poll-tested scripts and no original ideas. Republicans, on the other hand, continue to show why we are the party of ideas and principles. We offer better choices to a greater number of voters – a majority of whom we believe will find a home within our ranks.
The Republic is reporting that state representative Ann Kirkpatrick has resigned in order to begin the process of raising money to challenge Congressman Rick Renzi. This could be big trouble for the two-term congressman given his troubles with ethics problems. This may be a good opportunity for other serious Republicans to also consider getting in the race, especially if an indictment is handed down against Renzi.

The Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry is hosting another web seminar (webinar) this Thursday at 11:00 am on the new Arizona Employer Sanctions Bill (HB 2779.) Get informed on the procedures and requirements for the new law. You can contact the chamber through their web site, http://www.azchamber.com/, or by phone at

Tonight, the Democrats gathered in South Carolina to debate. Most who watched, believe Barak Obama won handily. Here’s a few observation by this blogger.
Hillary Clinton will NOT win the primaries but will win the nomination for President, Vice President.
Most Democrats loved Obama because he came off sincere but they also felt Clinton was telling them what they wanted to hear.
Democratic voters focus more on presonality over policy.
However, the same voters believe the team of Obama and Clinton will be a winning ticket for their party.
Look for both candidates to quickly realize this and lay off one another – they need each other to win. The minute they go negative on each other will be the minute their constituent base divides.
The Republicans better get their act together and find someone dynamic who can unify the party.
Thanks to Senator Chuck Gray for reminding us of the importance of selecting new judges.

The New American magazine has released their first ratings on the 110th congress. You know they do not grade on the curve when Franks and Shadegg only get 80%. Pastor and Grijalva both received 30%. Harry Mitchell got a 20% and Gabrielle Goffords was the lowest score in Arizona at 10%. Just for reference Rahm Emmanuel (IL-5) received a 20%, John Conyers (MI-14) a 30%, and Ron Paul (TX-14) get the only 100%.
Don’t miss the cartoon on page 5 of the report.
No, that’s not an actual quote. But lost in all of the press coverage of McDonald’s franchisee Mac Magruder and his campaign to save his burger empire from sanctions on employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens, is the tale of State Representative Bill Konopnicki (R-05). Konopnicki is a self-described moderate Republican from Northern Arizona who has never hesitated to cross party lines and work with Democrats on budgets and other matters.
So can you guess how Rep. Konopnicki voted on the employer sanctions bill? Yup, he voted for it. Okay, we admit it, so did lots of self-described moderates and Democrats. So what would make Konopnicki’s vote stand out from the rest? Well it turns out that he is a successful businessman who is what we worker bees might call wealthy. And how did he make much of his money? By owning 9 McDonalds franchises!
Curiously, the Arizona Republic has not yet picked up on this interesting tidbit. Ah yes, even in the summertime, it is always interesting here on West Washington!
Oil refineries across the country have been plagued by a record number of fires, power failures, leaks, spills and breakdowns this year, causing dozens of them to shut down temporarily or trim production. The disruptions are helping to drive gasoline prices to highs not seen since last summer’s records.
According to an article linked to by the Drudge Report, gas prices are continuing to increase more this summer – over $3.00 a gallon now. Therefore, it’s time for AG Terry Goddard to call yet another press conference, express his outrage, demand an investigation, and then complain that he has no jurisdiction to do anything about it. Here is a typical press release he’s used in the past he could recycle. And here’s one to use at the end of the investigation saying, as usual, he can’t do anything because he has no jurisdiction.
The Arizona Republic is running a story today on Councilwoman Peggy Bilsten’s use of a city employee to paint her house.
Bilsten, who allegedly threatened an aide, Susan Fitch, with a loss of her job, had Fitch paint her kitchen and living room while she was on taxpayers’ time. And the plot thickens as allegations expand to include express-shipping pain pills to vacation homes and deleting emails that were part of a public records requests.
Reading the article, it appears to become another case of “she said, she said.”

Hats off to Arizona 8th for breaking the story on Jonathan Paton announcing the formation of an exploratory committee for the Senate in District 30.
Given Paton’s accomplishments and the likely clear path ahead, he will be a huge asset to the State Senate.

Thanks to our friends over at SeeingRedAZ for blogishing this to blogosphere.
By now, if you’re a dedicated KKNT-960 AM radio listener, you’ve heard this ad being run by a group called “America’s Majority.”
If you’re like us, you’re shocked and bewildered.
The ad basically threatens conservatives with losing political power and numbers if they don’t shut up about the illegal immigration.
We thought we’d write a letter to the General Manager at KKNT and ask for an explanation. Here’s the text of our letter to Station Manager, John Timms:
Greetings John,
Many of us in the conservative blog movement are wondering what is going on at KKNT-960 – the source of our conservative political daily bread? We’ve heard ads by a group called America’s Majority that claim that Hispanics are being scared or angered off from the GOP because of immigration reform efforts.
Already, several blogs (seeingredaz) are abuzz over what discretion is being used in airing the ads. Some of us feel as if the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, MoveOn.org or PETA could walk into the station, lay their money down and get 30-60 seconds without anyone batting an eye.
We are also wondering how some of the station’s sponsors or talk show hosts would interpret this unusual intrusion.
We would appreciate an explanation even as a few of us give a benefit of the doubt.
We would be more than happy to allow you space on our blogs.
Awaiting your reply,
“DSW” – Sonoran Alliance
Here’s an email from Republican activist, Rob Haney, regarding MacDonald’s mogul, “Mac” Magruder, and his involvement with the newly formed group “Wake Up Arizona.”
You may not have heard JD Hayworth today. He interviewed Mark Magruder (Mac’s brother) who was in opposition to his brother’s money-motivated opposition to the employer’s sanction law. It was also pointed out that in a response letter to a former McDonalds customer, the McDonalds respondent wrote that McDonalds was in favor of Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Since the opposition forces to the employer sanction law seem to only understand the green language, we have taken our green language elsewhere and told McDonalds about it. It will be healthier for us anyway. If you care to do the same, their email address is:
Breaking News. The recent report by Jim Nintzel of the Tucson Weekly that Dr. Wayne Peate might get in the CD-8 race is outdated. Rumors that he will NOT run have just been confirmed directly with Peate’s office.
(Hey we just scooped the Tucson Weekly and Arizona 8th at the same time. We barely even consider the established newspapers competition at this time.)
The liberal Blog for Arizona has posted a letter criticizing Representative Shadegg for his PAC donations. When it comes to Representative Giffords the Dems are silent about the PACs and only talk about the large amount of money raised. Here is Gifford’s list of donations for the latest quarter. Looks like lots of PAC money. Giffords received $5,000 from American Crystal Sugar’s PAC. (Estimates put the cost to U.S. families of sugar quotas at billions of dollars per year.) I wonder if Gabrielle will vote with all of the sugar growers in her district of with the families and consumers that she is suppose to represent.
Oh, Arizona 8th did a nice job scooping us on Paton’s plans in LD 30. We will return the favor with some breaking news on CD 8. Maybe that the field has now been cleared for the Republican favorite.
