The penumbra of death.

This weekend will mark the 34th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s trip to the dark side of the moon and the resulting companion decisions that invented a new right fashioned out of thin air in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton.

On Saturday, January 20th there will be a March in Tucson (please note the new location.) On Sunday, January 21st there will be a Rally in Phoenix. These are good opportunities to show that people still care about their fellow humans, born and unborn. Hope to see you there!

Read the New York Times coverage of the Presidential straw poll taken at the recent Maricopa County GOP statutory meeting.

Baseline Killer & 2 Serial Shooters – glad that Andrew Thomas is the prosecutor

County Attorney Andrew Thomas is featured on the front of the Arizona Republic today announcing that Baseline Killer Mark Goudeau has been indicted on 74 more counts. With three serial murderers loose in Phoenix this past year or so, I have to say it’s been easier to sleep at night knowing that they will be punished to the full extent of the law by Thomas – no soft sentences. (no offense intended to Democratic Mayor Phil Gordon or Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris, who have done a fine job as well, but do not have the tough as nails record of Thomas) Thomas came into office pledging to be a tough as nails prosecutor and has proven to be. There was a study published in American Law & Economics Review in 2003 which found that every execution of a criminal deters 17 murders from happening.

WISH way forward.

cute baby.jpg One of our astute readers pointed out that Randy Pullen’s wife wrote a check to the Arizona WISH List, a front group for abortion-on-demand Republican politicians. The story was recently covered on several other blogs.

After sending it to our research department we found out that back in 2003 when Randy was running for Major of Phoenix a campaign fundraiser at the time advised him to attend a WISH event. Under the impression that it was just a Republican women’s group she purchase a table.

(This is really a side issue in the debate of who should run the state party but if association with Arizona WISH List is a drawback then Lisa James is in a lot of trouble. She is not only endorsed by several prominent WISH List supporters but Lisa chose to highlight their names on her web page. We won’t mention them all but if Carolyn Allen and Michael Reagan are behind James then Pullen is not the WISH candidate of choice.)

Guest workers may be in violation of new minimum wage law.

border mtns.jpg      Some people say that we can never secure the border and that a guest worker program is the solution. The idea totally ignores the fact that not everyone who crosses the border is looking for legitimate work. The Arizona Daily Star has an article about a few hapless drug mules who were assaulted as they were carrying their loads north. Several of them were shot and two ended up dead. The survivors made it to a residence just south of the artsy community of Tubac and asked for help. At a location is over 16 miles inside U.S. territory bandits are shooting at campesinos carrying drugs into our country.

I know it has been difficult up to this point to get the Governor and AG to do much about the out of control border but perhaps Terry Goddard could open an investigation into whether any part of the new minimum wage law was violated. Certainly he should have them at least on some workplace safety violations. I only mention those crimes because it seems like drug trafficking, assault with a deadly weapon, and murder do not get much attention from our elected officials these days.
