Bush supports private industry, wants government out of the way.

The current debate about federal funding for embryonic stem cell research misses the point.  If embryonic stem cells are so powerful, supporters claim scientists are on the verge of curing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Diabetes, Global Warming, etc., why aren’t private firms scrambling to fund this research?  Quite simply if the private sector is not willing to fund it they do not see a return on investment.  No return in curing these common diseases?  No, there would be a return, a great one.  The companies must know something that the culture of death, in this case the culture of harvesting one life for another, does not understand.  Embryonic stem cells do not have much promise.  If they did biotech firms the world over would privately fund the work and develop miracle cures quite rapidly.

If private firms are doing the research then there is no need for the government to step in.  That would only delay the eventual purported cures.

Another alternative to private funding is other governments funding it.  Let the Europeans spend a little money for once.  Really, if there were a profit to be made the blood sucking French would be all over this.  The Chinese are flush with cash and are not hindered by ethics.  They would be happy to flood the world market with cheap fixes to all sorts of ailments.

Bush is correct to make this a moral issue but the other story is that embryonic stem cell research is a matter of budgetary priorities and funding it would result in a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Carolyn Allen Fabricating Endorsements

Speaking of endorsements or actually, false ones, here’s a scoop about a fabricated endorsement by liberal Republican Carolyn Allen, the RINO running against conservative Colette Rosati in the primary race in district 8.

Apparently, Allen has been telling the public that she has been endorsed by conservative Republican and Speaker of the House, Jim Weiers.

Not true. In fact when recently asked in a public forum about the so-called endorsement, Weiers asserted that he had not endorsed Allen.

Here’s the story:

Carolyn Allen Falsely Claims Endorsement

Liberal Republican Senator Falsely Claims Endorsement of House Speaker

(Scottsdale)  Showing that she will say or do anything to hold onto her seat, liberal Republican State Senator Carolyn Allen has falsely claimed to have the endorsement of House Speaker Jim Weiers.

In the March 12, 2006 edition of the Arizona Republic, it was reported that Allen “boast(ed) about an endorsement from House Speaker Jim Weiers.  Two nights ago at a Republican meeting, Speaker Weiers was asked if he had in fact endorsed Allen, Weiers said no he had not.

“I am extremely disappointed that my Senate colleague Carolyn Allen would falsely claim an endorsement she didn’t have,” said State Senator Jack Harper who along with nearly 40 other people witnessed Speaker Weiers say he did not endorse Allen.  “The Speaker seemed pretty clear to me when asked whether or not he had endorsed Allen as she had claimed.  His answer was an emphatic NO.”

“It’s not surprising to me that she would claim a conservative endorsement she doesn’t have,” said State Representative Colette Rosati.  “Carolyn’s plan in the race has been clear from the beginning.  She is going to do everything in her power to hide her liberal record of supporting higher taxes, illegal immigration, and more government spending.  She knows that if she runs on her own liberal record, she will lose.”

Rosati continued, “I encourage Carolyn to join me in running a campaign that is focused on the issues.  Falsely claiming endorsements in an attempt to trick voters is not what this campaign should be about.  I plan to run this campaign on the issues, and I hope Carolyn will abandon her misleading ways and join me in a healthy debate on the issues facing our district and our state.”

What’s Wrong With This Story?

It’s amazing that it has now come to a commission, or specifically the opinion of one person who serves that commission, that a person’s opinion can now be used to help another candidate financially. If a union newspaper promotes Janet Napolitano for Governor, can we count on the CCEC to trigger matching funds to the Republican Clean Elections candidates?

Catalog in Clean Elections sightsBy Howard Fischer, Capitol Media Services
July 11, 2006
The Citizens Clean Elections Commission will have to decide what is a legitimate newspaper and what is not.

Todd Lang, executive director of the Citizens Clean Elections Commission, said he is exploring whether an endorsement of Republican gubernatorial hopeful Len Munsil in a catalog published by a Prescott gun dealer amounts to an in-kind contribution to Munsil’s campaign.

An in-kind contribution is a noncash gift that can be given a cash value. The catalog with the endorsement was mailed to about 13,000 Arizonans.

Lang said if such an endorsement is to be considered a contribution — which is his preliminary conclusion — then the value of that endorsement should be considered an expense by the Munsil campaign. And that would trigger a match of public monies to Don Goldwater, the other publicly financed candidate in the Republican gubernatorial campaign.

What Lang and the commission conclude has implications far beyond the J&G Gun Sales catalog: It puts the state in the position of defining what is a legitimate news publication. That’s because an endorsement by what the commission considers a newspaper or magazine does not trigger matching funds, even if that endorsement were to suggest that people volunteer time or donate funds to the candidate.

But an identical plea in a private publication that goes out to more than just association members, Lang said, effectively is a donation.

At the heart of the battle is an eight paragraph endorsement of Munsil in the J&G catalog sent out at the end of March, signed by Brent DeSaye, vice president of the family-owned company.

DeSaye wrote that he had spoken to Munsil about “issues that are critical to Arizona shooters and hunters’’ and found him friendly to issues of the right to own and carry firearms “how and where they choose.’’

Lang said there is no evidence of coordination between DeSaye and Munsil that would have made the endorsement — DeSaye called it an “editorial’’ — an illegal direct campaign donation. But he said it still could qualify as an in-kind contribution.

He conceded that course of action is fraught with potential pitfalls. The first, he said, is determining the value of the endorsement.

Potentially more serious would be that the Citizens Clean Elections Commission would have to determine what is a legitimate news publication, whose endorsement does not trigger matching funds, and what is not.

“My preliminary take is this is not a newspaper,’’ Lang said.

“This is effectively a mailer,’’ he continued. “It’s effectively the same thing as printing a gun catalog, mailing it to your guys, and then sticking a poster of Munsil in the middle of it.’’

Lang conceded he’s not exactly sure where the line is drawn. But he said that daily newspapers clearly qualify as legitimate publications and the J. Crew catalog does not.

“The question is what about in between those two,’’ he said. The matching dollars provision is available only to candidates who accept public funding for their campaigns and agree to limit spending. Republicans Mike Harris and Gary Tupper are running for governor with private donations or their own cash and would not get a match.

Too much power in the hands of one man? You judge.

The Real Steve Huffman.

twins1.jpg     Political endorsements are quite valuable but not always in the obvious way.  Take the race in Arizona Congressional District 8.

The top of Steve Huffman’s Endorsements page is filled by two moderates, Jim Kolbe and Bob Walkup.  You only need to go down to his number 3, 4, and 5 endorsements until you find 3 liberals.  Liberals is a very strong word.  What warrants such a term?  Simply put a Republican so devoid of principals as to vote against a tax cut.  That is exactly what these three, Hershberger, Burns, and Konopnicki, did on May 25 of this year.  According to the blog by Steve Voeller of the Arizona Free Enterprise Club titled Upset at a Little Sunshine (5-28-06.)

This may be a little inside baseball, but oh well.I received an email yesterday from an upset lawmaker. Upset at the fact that in a press release, I highlighted which Republicans voted against an income/property tax cut package on May 25. He was one of them.

Six Republicans voted against the bill. They are: Jennifer Burns, Bill Konopnicki, Pete Hershberger, Lucy Mason, Russ Jones, and Tom O’Halleran.

The problem for these folks is that they’re used having nobody notice when they vote against free market and pro-growth policies. But at the Club, our job is to advance these policies, and we have to find creative ways to do it. Publicizing votes and commenting on them is certainly part of the package.       So, a few Republican legislators voted against a tax cut.  These are the people who have spent the past few years working with Huffman and getting to know him well.  And what to these Tax and Spend representatives think of Steve?  They love him so much they are endorsing him.  Tell you something about Steve?  It tells me a lot.

Freedom in the Foothills.

Last night the Friends of the NRA held their Tucson Dinner at the La Paloma Resort in the Foothills. It was a larger venue than years past and was sold out for days.

The keynote speech by Wayne LaPierre received multiple standing ovations. NRA President Sandy Froman was also very well received as she spoke and introduced Wayne.

The evening went well and there were more Republicans there than at a state party convention. Len Munsil and Don Goldwater were greeting attendees as they walked toward the ballroom. Hanging out with Len was AG candidate Bill Montgomery. Mike Harris also joined the event.

All of the Republican CD8 candidates were there. Randy Graf had a table, same for Frank Antenori. Mike Hellon’s table was graced by Ray Carroll. Mike Jenkins also had no problem filling his table. Steve Hufman showed up but did not stay for too long. Maybe Steve did not want to have to explain his C rating on the firearms issue from the Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Association

Representing CD7 was the standout (actually stand-above) Hon. Ron Drake

The next State Treasurer, Dean Martin, and his lovely wife came down from the Phoenix area. (Dean’s web site wins the award this year for best music.)

This year’s event was actually held in legislative district 26 and it showed. State Senator Toni Hellon was there as well as her opponent Al Melvin. The house side of 26 was well represented by Carol Somers, David Jorgenson, and Lisa Lovallo. Noticeably absent was the F rated Pete Hershbuger. Strange that someone who says he supports the 2nd Amendment on his web site can’t make it to an NRA dinner. No surprise actually since he has received an F rating from the NRA several years running. Oh, did I mention that Pete has an F rating from the NRA.

Not to be left out, district 30 was also well represented. State Senator Tim Bee and Representative Jonathan Paton also attended.

Despite a little bit of campaigning going on the auction raised a bucket of money for youth shooting programs and for range improvements in the state. A great cause and a great evening for passing on the traditions of our freedom loving country.

A Letter to Pro-Life Incumbents

As many of you know, I serve as Executive Director of Arizona Right to Life. I am also a member of the Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee. I have always held and asserted that the first and foremost right enumerated in our Bill of Rights is the Right to Life. The logic here is that without the right to life first, no other rights are guaranteed.

One of the election issues we, the political action committee, must address is the endorsement of “pro-choice” (I hate that term because the choice is never defined) by pro-life incumbents. For example, Senator A endorses candidate for the House B. Usually this happens because Senator A happens to like or get along with candidate B, althought they may differ in issues.

Let me be blunt, this hurts the pro-life movement and our efforts as a movement to protect the right to life through public policy and law. In fact, we strongly urge pro-life incumbents to not endorse “pro-choice” candidates.

The following letter was issued by the Chairman of the Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee, Chris Valdivia, in order to explain the importance of our position:

Dear Incumbent,

I wanted to thank you for your hard work as a member of the State Legislature and in Congress, particularly in defense of innocent human life. I also want to tell you that we at Arizona Right to Life’s Political Action Committee look forward to working with you in 2006 on additional pro-life legislation and on your re-election efforts.

As the political season heats up and various seats open up, we want you to know that we are hard at work identifying solid pro-life candidates to fill those seats. Each of them will be thoroughly vetted on this critical area of the law.

We will also be sending out our usual surveys and I want to remind each of you that we are unable to formally endorse any candidates, incumbents included , who have not signed and returned the surveys. While this is an inconvenience for busy people, it is a long-standing rule within our organization and one that we are unlikely to change.

Finally, as various candidates declare for office, many of them will likely seek you out for your support, guidance, and/or endorsement. Please make sure to find out where these candidates are on the life issue before endorsing their candidacy. Too often in the past, we have worked hard to elect candidates, only to find ourselves later opposing pro-abortion candidates who shield themselves from our attacks by hiding behind endorsements from those same pro-life officials. When determining who to endorse, our PAC will consider your entire record and hope that you will take care not to allow your own good name and reputation to be tarnished by those who do not value human life.

Thank you again for all of your hard work, and please let us know if we can be of any assistance to you in 2006!

Warmest regards,

Chris Valdivia , Chairman
Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee

I trust this statement will resound with those already in office and at the least, give pro-life incumbents the allowance to say nothing in a race between pro-life and pro-abortion candidates.

Cleaning up.

The legislative races in Northwest Tucson just got a little more competitive. The two conservative Republican candidates have received another round of clean election funds

Captain Al Melvin (Ret. USNR) just got another $25,307. Al is running for the State Senate against moderate Toni Hellon. They both attended a district forum last weekend in which Toni recommended a vote against Al because he was from Pinal County. Gee Toni, great way to win over the 3,300 retired Republicans in SaddleBrooke who will vote in droves in the primary.

Homebuilder David Jorgenson received an additional $11,898 in funds. David is running for the seat vacated by Steve Huffman. David is the only Reagan Republican in a crowded 4-way race for the State House of Representatives.

It will be interesting to see if Pete Hershberger survives as the most liberal, anti-gun member of the Republican legislative caucus with such excellent alternatives

These will probable not be the last clean election checks that Al and David receive due to the large amounts of money that the other candidates have raised. The campaigns will become very competitive, as they are able to get their appealing message out to the conservative voters of the district who have been waiting years for a reason to vote in the primary.

Kudos to Ray Carroll.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted today to continue to allow perverts to openly view pornography on library computers. Supervisor Carroll in not know for his conservative social views but he gets a gold star for his brave and common sense position on this issue.

Carroll proposed to install filters to prevent the display of porn but his motion did not receive a second. Fellow Republican Ann Day did not even support Ray. Ann must have decided that she is not running again. It could be that she did not hear or understand the motion. Either way Ann has no future in the increasingly conservative District 1 after her timid reaction to Carroll’s leadership on this issue.

There are only a few issues that lend themselves to true sound bite status. Supporting porn at the library is one of them and Ann Day just earned that tag.

Ray, a big thanks from District 1. We very much appreciate your efforts regarding this issue.

LD 6 Gone Wild – Part II

The latest news on the LD 6 House race is that Clancy Jayne is off the ballot. So what’s the story with his name still posted as a candidate on the Secretary of State’s website? They must really be backed up as they count/check signatures – so much to the point that even the webmaster doesn’t get a break.

In other news from district 6, the challenge on Ted Carpenter’s signatures has now escalated to the Arizona State Supreme Court. The lower Superior Court determined that there was not enough information available to warrant an act of fraud. Thus, the challenger, has asked for the case to be heard by the State Supreme Court. Look for this to make headlines in the next week.

Thought police invade NW Tucson.

The chairman of the Republican District 26 committee was away this weekend so Linda White ruled over the meeting with an iron fist. During the regularly scheduled time for new business a precinct committeeman from the district was making a motion when Linda ruled the motion out of order even before the person was finished. When Linda was asked on what grounds the motion was not to be heard she could not answer.

There are few things more precious in this Republic than free speech. The motion was made during new business after receiving permission from the chair to speak. Linda clearly went overboard in her censorship by imposing her own will on the meeting. A real “Ministry of Truth” moment. A party that cannot debate and discuss fundamental issues is a party with a dim future. So much for the big tent theory.

Issues Dems Avoid

Here’s an interesting observation I’ve made differentiating Democrats from Republicans. Almost every Democratic candidate website I’ve visited avoids using the words “pro-choice” or “reproductive-rights.” In the past Dems have ran from the “A” word like the plague but apparently during this election cycle, they are not even using typical “pro-choice” rhetoric.

Perhaps the voters have caught on to the reality that such language is really double-speak for the gruesome act of killing an innocent vulnerable baby? Or maybe someone at the top drafted this year’s playbook such that the only issue word to be used is “health care.” Take a look for yourself at a few of these Dems website by visiting the Democratic candidate website.

Another observation is that they hardly mention the “M” word or “G” word. I’m guessing that many won’t take a position on gay marriage since it will be a major issue on the November ballot.

On the contrary, most Republican candidate website proudly proclaim a position on the right to life and marriage. That’s good news.

In my consulting advice, any Republican should corner their Democratic opponent on these issues and force them to reveal their true position. This will be a winning strategy for most Republicans and it will help the voters differentiate candidates night from day.

Guest workers needed for jobs American’s won’t do.

This story is almost too rich for words.  This truly is a job in which many working Americans are not interested, servicing their congressman.  We really won’t miss ya Jim.

Who Supports Homosexual Marriage?

Here is the official list of individuals and organizations who support homosexual marriage in the State of Arizona. See anyone you know? This organization will be actively opposing the Protect Marriage Amendment which will be on the November ballot. I suppose that if the state is not allowed to define marriage than this organization would not oppose efforts to legalize marriage between more than one man and one woman, marriage between minors and/or adults, marriage between humans and inanimate objects and marriage between humans and other species. Call me absurd? Watch what happens in the future.

Huffman’s folly, update.

The Star has an article on the state of the Rio Dinero.  My favorite is the $350 million dollar rainbow bridge.  More like the pigeon housing project.

Steve why didn’t you represent your district and get a little money for a bridge over the CDO wash at La Cholla.  That is actually a project that people would use.

Northwest Tucson update.

The 4th is a wonderful time to have a picnic and watch some fireworks. Few places offer a better setting than Oro Valley. Hundreds of people gathered at Riverfront Park to enjoy the the sounds of the Tucson Symphony while gazing at the beautiful silhouette of the Catalinas and Pusch Ridge. Thanks to GOVAC

Due to the time of the year several political campaigns were out in force. As you walked in Gabby Giffords supporters were handing out literature to everyone. Since the area is about 2-1 Republican this was a sign of how well organized and funded Gabby’s campaign is. Patty and the other candidates or their supporters were nowhere to be seen. Since Jeff Latas lives a few minutes from the park you would at least think some of his supporters would have been there. Nothing from Jeff. Not a good sign for him.

The stand out among the Republicans was the Randy Graf ramada. Some Graf supporters had got there early in the morning to reserve the spot. They served hot dogs and sodas. It was base camp for the other conservative candidates. Randy was walking around among the people meeting and talking with voters. Also out in force were supporters for Carol Somers. They were handing out necklaces for Carol. Al Melvin and David Jorgenson were handing out their literature and talking with the locals.

Lisa Lovallo was working solo handing out her literature. She did not spend too much time at the Graf ramada. Toni and Mike Hellon were there but they did not seem to be interested in campaigning.

The amazing part was that Steve Huffman did not have a presence. Oro Valley is in the middle of Steve’s legislative district. The price that Steve will need to spend to buy this seat goes up each day. If he cannot even get supporters to show up for a major event in his back yard how can he ever expect to win the general? Some are saying Steve is too moderate to win the general. More like Huffman is a horrible campaigner and Gabby or even Patty would easily out campaign him.

Lynn Stanley – A Sad and Terrible Loss

Yesterday, the pro-family movement lost a great hero. Lynn Stanley died in an auto accident while returning from a visit with her sisters in Las Vegas. About 6:30 in the morning, Lynn lost control of her vehicle and died in a rollover on highway 40 between Kingman and Flagstaff. She was returning home to lead the final effort in submitting over 300,000 signatures to place the Protect Marriage Amendment on the ballot.

Lynn’s death is a tremendous loss.

When I read the Arizona Republic this morning, I was shocked that they would headline her death with the following words: “Anti-gay marriage leader dies.”

Shame on the Arizona Republic! Shame on Matthew Benson and shame on the editor who wrote the headline! What kind of evil statement is this by the people at the Republic?

Lynn’s work was not anti-gay. The Protect Marriage Amendment is not about outlawing homosexuality. The work she was so dedicated to in the last days of her life was about clarifying the definition of marriage – the most fundamental and most stable building block of our society. To say that Lynn was focusing on discriminating against homosexuals is a huge slander and lie. When I read the Republic, my blood boils. Is it no wonder that they continue to lose readers?

Let’s not let the Republic have the last word on the truth about Lynn Stanley’s work and life. As we proceed on without her, let’s dedicate our efforts even more toward protecting the institution that remains true to a strong and healthy society.

Thank you Lynn Stanley for your work and your dedication to the greatest of causes – protecting the family.

Clancy Jayne… Gone

Clancy Jayne has been removed from the ballot. Today, a Maricopa judge heard the complaint by the Seel campaign challenging the validity of Jayne’s signatures. Seel won. Since the court hearing, both Clancy Jayne’s websites (site 1) (site 2) have been pulled. (Prior to noon, both sites were up and running.) This means that Jayne will now have to return clean elections money to whomever he received it. He will also have court fees to pay. What is not settled is if Jayne’s complaint against Carl Seel will still go to court.
