Staples Avery 5160That the cost to purchase labels from the Human Rights Fund – an organization whose mission is “to secure, protect and defend the rights and welfare of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals living in Arizona.”

This was one of the latest expenditures reported to the Secretary of State’s Office by the campaign committee of Toni Hellon running for the State Senate in Northwest Tucson.

Based on my experience with lists rentals, either Senator Toni Hellon got a smoking deal on these labels or, there ain’t a whole lot of names on these labels.

Still I’m somewhat perplexed. If you run to Staples to pick up a box of Avery 5160’s. It will cost you $24.59 for 3,000 labels. (That’s without sales tax.) That works out to $0.0081 per label. If I were to charge $13.30 per label that means I would expect to hand out 1,623 labels just to break even. Now imagine if there were names printed on the labels. That would add more value to each label which would inversely affect the number of labels you could buy at the $0.0081/label rate. In other words, you wouldn’t be able to buy the same number of labels.

Now I find it hard to believe that Toni Hellon would drive down to her local Human Rights Fund chapter to borrow 1,623 blank labels like a desperate housewife runs next door to borrow a cup of sugar. This begs the question: If the Human Rights Fund really lives up to its name, wouldn’t they be putting a whole lot more value on their people who live in district 26?

Unless of course, they’re desperate to elect someone who push their legislative agenda.
